Your Ultimate Guide to Infinite Flight Fuel Burn
Sometime in early 2021, I decided to start my most ambitious Infinite Flight related project to date. I was going to find a fuel burn profile for every airliner in the game, so that people could minimize the fuel they used as well as not accidentally pack too little and have to divert.
August came and went, and my subscription expired and I chose not to renew it. I didn’t finish the project. Over this summer, I decided to come back to it due to the semi-frequent “fuel burn” topic. Yes, I bought a month subscription and spent $10 to do less than an hour of flying on live servers just so I could finish this. I really hope this helps at least one person.
Fuel Calculator
In my previous fuel burn topics, I provided fuel burns with respect to load and altitude. This time, I have added a calculator too. Instructions will be in the follow-up post.
Disclaimers
I don’t have enough characters to write a full list but basically I’m not perfect, my numbers aren’t perfect, and I assume no responsibility for violations (but let me know if something is wrong).
Aircraft Included
This guide is mostly for airliners, so military aircraft as well as select general aviation and specialized aircraft are not included. I simply don’t have the expertise to even begin to measure fuel burn for these aircraft because there are so many variables that I don’t know. However, I suspect that the vast majority of you aren’t long hauling these aircraft anyways so this shouldn’t be a problem.

Airbus A321-200 [A321]
Fuel Capacity: 55,609 lbs or 25,224 kgs
Tested Speed: M 0.80

Theoretical Maximum Flight Time: 13hr 50m
Flight Profile (East): FL290 (100%-0%)
Flight Profile (West): FL280 (100%-0%)
Additional Comments: The A321 has a bit of a broken fuel curve in which it doesn’t exactly matter what altitude you fly at. As long as you aren’t being egregious (like FL400 at 100% load), you will probably be well within margin of error. It also seems to be more efficient at M 0.80 when heavier and 0.78 when lighter.

Airbus A330-900neo [A339]
Fuel Capacity: 245,313 lbs or 111,272 kgs
Tested Speed: M 0.82
Game-Estimated Maximum Flight Time: 24hr 11m
Theoretical Maximum Flight Time: 24hr 36m
Flight Profile (East): FL290 (100%-81%), FL310 (80%-71%), FL330 (70%-61%), FL350 (60%-41%), FL370 (40%-31%), FL390 (30%-11%), FL410 (10%-0%)
Flight Profile (West): FL280 (100%-91%), FL300 (90%-81%), FL320 (80%-61%), FL340 (60%-51%), FL360 (50%-31%), FL380 (30%-21%), FL400 (20%-0%)
Additional Comments: Interesting to note that the A339 presents little fuel efficiency advantage over the A333 (the 40 extra minutes of flight time comes from the added fuel capacity). The only benefit is a slightly higher load capacity, which means a lower load percentage with the same non-fuel weight which means slightly less burn with heavy non-fuel loads.
Airbus A340-600 [A346] (LEGACY)
Fuel Capacity: 375,932 lbs or 170,520 kgs
Tested Speed: M 0.82
Game-Estimated Maximum Flight Time: 17hr 21m
Theoretical Maximum Flight Time: 18hr 16m
Flight Profile (East): FL290 (100%-31%), FL310 (30%-0%)
Flight Profile (West): FL280 (100%-41%), FL300 (40%-21%), FL320 (20%-0%)
Additional Comments: Slight fuel advantage going west but not enough for me to make two different regressions for the calculator.
Airbus A350-900 [A359]
Fuel Capacity: 285,499 lbs or 129,500 kgs
Tested Speed: M 0.85
Game-Estimated Maximum Flight Time: 22hr 19m

Flight Profile (East): FL290 (100%-51%), FL310 (50%-0%)
Flight Profile (West): FL280 (100%-31%), FL320 (30%-0%)
Additional Comments: I know most of you won’t want to fly your A350 this way so if you follow a more normal curve starting around FL330 and going up to FL410 and climbing linearly, plan to add about 500 pounds of additional fuel per flight hour.
Airbus A380-800 [A388] (LEGACY)
Fuel Capacity: 559,937 lbs or 253,983 kgs
Tested Speed: M 0.85
Game-Estimated Maximum Flight Time: 22hr 11m
Theoretical Maximum Flight Time: 22hr 13m
Flight Profile (East): FL350 (100%-91%), FL370 (90%-71%), FL390 (70%-41%), FL410 (40%-11%), FL430 (10%-0%)
Flight Profile (West): FL360 (100%-81%), FL380 (80%-51%), FL400 (50%-21%), FL420 (20%-0%)
Additional Comments: Flight profiles may result in over 100% N1. If you would like to avoid this, just follow a profile to be as close to 100% N1 as possible as this seems to be where the aircraft is efficient.
Boeing Aircraft
Boeing 717-200 [B712]

Flight Profile (West): FL300 (100%-71%), FL320 (70%-61%), FL340 (60%-41%), FL360 (40%-21%), FL380 (20%-11%), FL400 (10%-0%)
Additional Comments: This is the only aircraft in this guide that can go over MTOW in just fuel. If you are attempting a maximum flight time run, this 13% extra load in fuel will get you about 80 minutes in flight time.
Boeing 737-800 [B738]
Fuel Capacity: 46,068 lbs or 20,896 kgs
Tested Speed: M 0.78
Game-Estimated Maximum Flight Time: 8hr 24m

Flight Profile (West): FL280 (100%-31%), FL300 (30%-0%)
Additional Comments: Using Flaps 10 saves a massive amount of fuel in a pinch.
Boeing 747-8 [B748]
Fuel Capacity: 433,936 lbs or 196,830 kgs
Tested Speed: M 0.85
Game-Estimated Maximum Flight Time: 23hr 44m
Theoretical Maximum Flight Time (East): 20hr 50m

Flight Profile (West): FL280 (100%-0%)
Additional Comments: This is the only aircraft in this guide that had such a big east/west discrepancy that I decided to do one calculator for each (for comparison, most other aircraft are within 5 minutes between their east and west profiles). It is likely that FL270 has the same effect as FL280, but that is below the Mach Transition so I chose not to include it.
Boeing 757-200 [B752]

Flight Profile (West): FL340 (100%-91%), FL360 (90%-61%), FL380 (60%-41%), FL400 (40%-31%), FL420 (30%-0%)
Additional Comments: This has got to be the most ridiculous fuel curve in the game. Everything is fine until you get to the lower weights. Then, the MD-11 enters this pocket where around 70% (ish) throttle it experiences a significant drop in fuel usage. This leads to some pretty insane numbers (as well as points where decreasing the weight actually increases fuel usage because it leaves the pocket). The safety margin on reserve fuel here is 1.5x the 50% 1-hour burn instead of 1x just in case the extra weight causes you to not get into the pocket.
McDonnell Douglas MD-11(F) [MD1F]
Fuel Capacity: 230,017 lbs or 104,334 kgs
Tested Speed: M 0.83
Game-Estimated Maximum Flight Time: 12hr 31m
Theoretical Maximum Flight Time: 19hr 25m
Flight Profile (East): FL350 (100%-81%), FL370 (70%-51%), FL390 (50%-31%), FL410 (30%-21%), FL430 (20%-0%)

Additional Comments: Like the DC-10, I was expecting this to have the same numbers as its passenger counterpart. However, this is not the case. It doesn’t go into the same pocket that the passenger version does, which leads to it having a more normal fuel curve (albeit it burns quite a bit more than the passenger version even when its out of the pocket).
These are to give you an idea of how the different aircraft in this game compare to each other.

Step Climbing
One question that I wanted to make sure to answer while putting together this project was which aircraft need step climbing to be efficient. One of the loading screens says you should step climb for greater range, but how true is this?
For the purposes of this chart, I will assume that you have picked a good starting altitude. Just because an aircraft is in “Don’t Bother” doesn’t mean you can take it to FL410 at 100% load.

Fuel Calculator Instructions
-
Input your zero fuel load (this is a percentage - not a weight in pounds or kilograms). To get this, load however many passengers and how much cargo you want without any fuel, and check the load percentage.
-
Input your projected flight time obtained from SimBrief, converted into a decimal (for example: 1 hour 30 minutes is 1.5, 3 hours 12 minutes is 3.2). Since the age requirement here is 13, I hope you guys can handle this. SimBrief times are generally a little longer than Infinite Flight flight times, so this extra fuel will make up for the excessive fuel you use on your climb out.
-
Fuel needed is (approximately) how much fuel you need to complete the flight. Please never take off with this load as there’s probably a good chance you won’t make it. Fuel with reserves adds an hour flight at 50% load worth of fuel. This will translate to an extra 45 minutes of flight time with most aircraft, which should be safe. I added a third section because I know a lot of you fly overnights where you don’t step climb.
I tried to make the calculator as usable as possible, but it isn’t idiot proof. Please use some common sense.
Note that all calculator values are simply based off trends and are not tested. So before you trust your account’s violation history on it, perhaps test it by bringing a little extra fuel and seeing how much you actually burn.
Closing Remarks
Honestly, this topic was long overdue but I’m glad I finally got it done. Doing all of this was tedious to say the least but I hope that the community appreciates it and finds it useful. Please do let me know if anything is mistyped in here or if my numbers are significantly off so that I can fix it.
Now I can retire in peace.
