Your Guide to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

Welcome to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, America’s Friendliest Airport. This is the Largest and Busiest Airport in the State of Arizona and among the largest commercial airports in the US. Serving about 45 Million passengers each year in 5 different countries across the globe. Sky Harbor is known to be the busiest three-runway airport in the world in terms of aircraft movement.

The airport was first opened in 1928 by J. Parker Van Zandt, the owner of Scenic Airways, purchasing 278 Acres of Land with a 100 x 120 foot airplane hangar and one runway in early 1929. The airport was sold to Acme Investing Company until 1935 when the City of Phoenix purchased the airport from Acme for $100,000.

TWA began service to San Francisco in 1938 and added Phoenix onto its Transcontinental Network by 1944 with flights to Los Angeles, New York, Albuquerque, Kansas City, and more. Arizona Airways began service within the state of Arizona in 1946 until 1950 when it merged into Frontier Airlines.

After America West Airlines Merged with U.S. Airways in 2005, the airline moved its headquarters to the AWA campus in Tempe retaining their managers until U.S. Airways merged with American Airlines in 2015 continuing to build upon the largest hub operation at Sky Harbor Airport.

This Airport is a hub for American Airlines and a Base for Southwest Airlines and Frontier Airlines. It is also home to the 161st Air Refueling Wing which is an Air Mobility Command-gained unit of the Arizona Air National Guard.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has 3 Terminals. One of which has now closed in real life.

Really nicely done! And fascinating to sift through all the details: for years it was my home airport, but it sure has grown!

Just coincidentally I saw your topic immediately after I had gone looking for a previous screenshot set-up I was attempting:

From Sky Harbor attempting to get a good line up of Papago Park, Red Mountain and Four Peaks (inspired by @Alaska170 's Air Force One spotting topic shot, from back in March)

I was a bit stunned that old terminal is now gone, and all the destinations you list that would have been impossible to imagine at an earlier time…

Sun Country actually flies into Mesa (AZA) from Duluth and Rochester. Great guide, otherwise!

I haven’t been there since before covid so, until I read your guide, I hadn’t known the Sky Harbor iconic:

has become:

Moved to the car rental center.

It used to be you couldn’t pass through Phoenix airport without seeing that artwork.

I also noted the number of options to get to Europe, or even Canada by direct flight, which certainly was not the case at one time.

Looks pretty accurate to me. Nice job.

Southern Airways no longer does the route to Show Low. They only fly to Imperial, CA and Contour has taken over the Show Low route

I will update that. I recently heard Aeromexico is also coming back to PHX for flights to Mexico City with a 737 Max-8.

Not only that… Condor Lost their PHX-FRA route due to a Court Order in Germany.
