GEN INFO
Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), ICAO code RPLL, is the primary international gateway to the Philippines and one of the busiest airports in Southeast Asia. Located between the cities of Pasay and Parañaque, just south of Metro Manila, NAIA sits at an elevation of 75 feet above sea level and is uniquely positioned in the heart of a dense urban environment. This location creates both opportunities and challenges, as the airport serves as a lifeline for international connectivity while also facing limitations in expansion due to surrounding development.
HISTORY
The airport was originally established in 1948 on the grounds of the former Nichols Air Base. It was known simply as Manila International Airport (MIA) until 1987, when it was renamed in honor of Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., who was assassinated at the airport in 1983. Over the decades, NAIA has evolved from a modest airfield into a major hub, reflecting the Philippines’ growth in tourism, commerce, and overseas employment.
SIGNIFICANCE
Today, NAIA handles over 45 million passengers per year, with flights spanning across Asia, the Middle East, North America, and Europe. It serves as the main hub for Philippine Airlines, the country’s flag carrier, as well as the base for Cebu Pacific and Philippines AirAsia. The airport also hosts a wide range of foreign airlines, making it the most diverse and globally connected airport in the country. Cargo operations also play a critical role at NAIA, linking the Philippines’ export-driven economy to international markets.

Terminal 1 (International & Cargo Complex)
Opened in 1981, this was the original main terminal of NAIA, serving most international flights from the Middle East, Europe, and parts of Asia. It handles around 6 million passengers annually. Next to Terminal 1 is the NAIA Cargo Complex, housing facilities for major freight operators like Philippine Airlines Cargo, Cebu Pacific Cargo, DHL, FedEx, UPS, and other forwarders. This makes it the country’s air freight hub.
Terminal 2 (Centennial Terminal)
Inaugurated in 1999, Terminal 2 was originally built as the home of Philippine Airlines (PAL). Over time, it has expanded its role and today it is used by Sunlight Air, Royal Air, PAL Express, and AirAsia. Following the demolition of the old Terminal 4, Terminal 2 has become the new domestic hub of NAIA. It features two wings — one for domestic flights and another for international operations — and is also connected to nearby support buildings for cargo and airline administration.
Terminal 3 (NAIA T3)
The largest and most modern terminal, opened in 2008, it serves major domestic and international flights for airlines such as Cebu Pacific, AirAsia Philippines, and ANA. With its wide concourses, modern amenities, and largest apron space, it can accommodate widebodies like the A350 and B777.
NOW DEMOLISHED Terminal 4 (Domestic Terminal)
The oldest and smallest, serving mainly low-cost domestic carriers like Sunlight Air and other provincial operators. Its facilities are basic, but it remains vital for short-haul domestic operations.
General Aviation Hangars
Located on the western side near Runway 13/31, these hangars serve private jets, charter operators, and flying schools. They are essential for business aviation and training flights.
Presidential & Military Aprons
On the southern edge near Villamor Air Base, this area is reserved for the Philippine Air Force, Presidential Airlift Wing, and official government aircraft.
Maintenance Aprons
Home to Lufthansa Technik Philippines (LTP) and other MRO facilities, located east of the airport near Taxiway N. This is the hub for aircraft repair, checks, and overhauls for many regional and international airlines.

Terminal 1 (Internasyonal at Cargo Complex)
Terminal 3 (NAIA T3)
Pinakamalaki at pinakabago, binuksan noong 2008.
Dating Terminal 4 (Domestic Terminal)
Presidential at Military Aprons
Nasa timog malapit sa Villamor Air Base, ginagamit ng Philippine Air Force at Presidential Airlift Wing.
Maintenance Aprons

Runway 31 Arrivals – Forbidden
All arrivals into Runway 31 are prohibited except for emergencies. The approach path is operationally unsafe due to terrain obstacles, airspace restrictions, and noise abatement procedures over dense residential areas.
Runway 13 Arrivals – Limited (Aircraft Size Restriction)
Only aircraft below the size of an Airbus A321neo are permitted to land or even use Runway 13. This means A320 family, regional jets, and turboprops may be allowed, while larger narrowbodies and widebodies are restricted. The limitation is due to airspace congestion, safety margins, and approach path constraints in the urban area.
Runway 13/31 Departures – Allowed
Departures from Runway 13 and 31 are permitted and regularly used. Aircraft may be assigned these runways for takeoff depending on wind direction, ATC sequencing, and operational needs.
General Note
Pilots must always check updated NOTAMs and coordinate with Manila Tower and Approach Control. Restrictions may change due to VIP movement, typhoon activity, or maintenance closures.

Filipino
Runway 31 Arrivals – Bawal

Class C Airspace
NAIA (RPLL) sits within Manila’s Class C controlled airspace, extending roughly 40 NM with layered vertical limits. Pilots must establish two-way communication and receive clearance before entry.
Altitude Restrictions
Standard transition altitude is 11,000 ft. Within the terminal area, arrivals and departures are sequenced with strict altitude separations due to nearby terrain and traffic density.
Proximity to Other Airports
Manila is surrounded by multiple airfields (Sangley, Subic, Clark, Basa, Villamor). Traffic coordination is essential to avoid conflicts.
Restricted Zones
Areas over Malacañang Palace, Villamor Air Base, and Sangley Naval Base are strictly prohibited for civilian overflight.
Noise & Size Limits
Runway 13/31 is limited to aircraft up to A321neo size; arrivals on 31 are forbidden, and arrivals on 13 are restricted.
VFR Corridors
VFR flights must remain within published corridors, generally over Manila Bay, to stay clear of controlled approaches.

Class C Airspace
Kinakailangang may dalawang-way na komunikasyon at clearance bago pumasok.
Altitude Restrictions

-
Primary Route – Manila Bay
- VFR flights are generally routed over Manila Bay, west of Runway 06/24 and 13/31, to avoid interference with IFR arrivals and departures.
- Expect altitude assignment below 2,500 ft when inside the control zone.
-
North Corridor (towards Bulacan/Clark)
- Flights departing northbound are directed to stay west of the Pasig River and continue over Manila Bay before turning inland.
- Avoid Malacañang and Villamor restricted zones.
-
South Corridor (towards Cavite/Batangas)
- VFR flights southbound are routed along the coastal line past Cavite, avoiding Sangley Point and naval base restrictions.
- Noise abatement applies—avoid direct overflight of dense residential areas.
-
Transition Altitudes
- Maintain 1,500–2,500 ft within the CTR.
- For extended VFR beyond 15–20 NM, expect climb clearance to 4,500–5,500 ft depending on direction (east/west rule).
-
Coordination
- Mandatory contact with RPLL Tower / Approach when within the TMA.
- Squawk 1200 (or as assigned) when outside controlled airspace.

-
Pangunahing Ruta – Manila Bay
-
Hilagang Corridor (patungong Bulacan/Clark)
-
Timog Corridor (patungong Cavite/Batangas)

English
NAIA (RPLL) is the busiest airport in the Philippines and one of the most complex in Infinite Flight. With short runways, tight airspace, and heavy traffic, it offers realistic challenges for pilots. Whether domestic or international, flights here test both planning and execution. Safe skies, pilots!”
——
