Your Guide to Fuel Burn and Cruising Altitudes in the A350 and 787 Family

This is like two months late, sorry.

How to Read This Guide

An orange cell signifies a cruise altitude a little too high for that aircraft at that weight that carries smaller fuel penalties.

A green cell signifies a cruise altitude appropriate for that aircraft at that weight going East, maximizing fuel economy.

A blue cell signifies a cruise altitude appropriate for that aircraft at that weight going West, maximizing fuel economy.

A grey cell signifies a cruise altitude that is too low for that aircraft at that weight that may or may not carry a small or large fuel penalty.

A bold number signifies a cruise altitude that is more realistic, even if it does not get the best fuel economy. These aircraft burn similar amounts of fuel across multiple flight levels (not sure why), so I am adding this specifically for them. Generally, using these more realistic profiles will only cut your maximum flight time by 10-15 minutes.

Fuel Capacity is simply the maximum fuel that can be loaded onto that aircraft.

Game-Estimated Maximum Flight Time is the flight time that Infinite Flight tells you when you fully fuel your aircraft.

Theoretical Maximum Flight Time is the flight time calculated from these numbers that is theoretically possibly, waiving all IFR altitude rules and reserve fuel rules.

Practical Maximum Flight Time is the flight time calculated from these numbers that takes into account a 90% passenger and 75% cargo load (75% cargo load only for the Freighter), IFR altitude rules, and reserve fuel rules. Beyond this flight time you will need to compromise on passengers/cargo.

Flight Profiles are the ideal sequences of cruise altitudes for an aircraft at different loads percentages.

Disclaimer I : Numbers are from solo testing and have not been tested live yet.

Disclaimer II : Measurements are taken at M 0.85 for all four aircraft.

Disclaimer III : To keep it simple, I only took measurements every 10% load. If there were huge drops in fuel burn over those 10% I tried to take them into account when determining the climb profile.

Disclaimer IV : I am assuming linear rate of change of fuel burn between 10% increments. This is likely not the case, but it should be close enough.

Disclaimer V : Numbers in charts are in pounds. Works all the same for kilograms just different numbers.

Disclaimer VI : Charts all start at FL330. It’s likely they may get slightly better economy at FL310 or FL320, but they almost never fly that low in real life.

  • The A350 has the longest range of these four.
  • The 787-8 has the longest range in the family, while the 787-9 and -10 share a similar range.
  • The 787-9 deals with heavy non-fuel loads the best
  • All 787s burn significantly less fuel as they get lighter, while the A350 does not. This means if you’re short a ton of fuel with a 787 at the beginning of a long haul, you’ll be okay.
  • The 787-9 has what I assume to be a bug, where when below 20%-ish load it becomes up to 15% more efficient if flown at ridiculously high altitudes (FL450-480).
  • It is likely that all 787s have better fuel economy at FL310 and 320 versus FL330 and 340 when heavy, but they never fly that low in real life.
  • Do not comment anything about “oh, but I see xxx and xxx thing happen in real life with these planes, you’re wrong” or I will steal your oatmeal (this is game data).
