Why some controller insist me using the shorter runway

The thing happened this afternoon, I was heading to rjaa Narita airport, flying with airbus 350. at that time, there was only approach of rjtt online, and there is no atis of Narita airport at that time.
Normally, airbus 359 will be aligned to 16R, I have set NAV1 to 16R as well. But when I contact approach, he asked me to landing on runway 16L which is shorter runway than 16R. I kept my thought, but he consistently send message to me that I have aligned the wrong runway.
I am curious that is there any rules regarding to this? my point is, 1. longer runway is safer than shorter one; 2. there is no atis that required landing on specific runway, what I think this means pilot can choose either of it on there discretion.

Runway 16L/34R perfectly long enough for the A350 when landing (2500m/8202ft) - technically the only aircraft in Infinite Flight restricted from using it is the A380 - but due to width restrictions of the surrounding taxiways.

If there is ATC - no. It’s up to them which runway to assign you. While they may look at your flight plan, ultimately it’s their call.

There should’ve been an ATIS open though highlighting the runways in use.

The margins are close, but even at MLW its possible.

At Narita 16L/34R is the main landing runway even it if it’s really short. 16R/34L is the secondary landing runway in most cases.

I understand that 16L is enough for airbus 359. However, there is no ATIS, in this case, why pilot cannot decide which runway to land?:joy:

When there is ATC, it’s not completely up to the pilot. ATC will take your request into account, but ultimately it’s their discretion. As long as the runway is long enough and the surrounding taxiways are sufficient (which in this case they are), there’s nothing wrong with it.

what you mean atc is including approach? or just ground or tower?

Irl, pilots have the final say. In the US, FAR 91.3 subsection a says: “The pilot in command of an aircraft is directly responsible for, and is the final authority as to, the operation of that aircraft.” This authority is also reflected internationally via ICAO annex 2, section 2.3.1 Responsibility of pilot-in-command “The pilot-in-command of an aircraft shall, whether manipulating the controls or not, be responsible for the operation of the aircraft in accordance with the rules of the air, except that the pilot-in-command may depart from these rules in circumstances that render such departure absolutely necessary in the interests of safety.”

In infinite flight, Benny is technically correct in saying that controllers have the final say despite a pilot’s request. However, the IFATC Controller Manual section 3.3.3 states: “Controllers should try to accommodate aircraft requests for different runways, provided it does not compromise the level of service given to other aircraft.”

Should is not mandatory. But should, according to the ATC manual, “STRONGLY RECOMMEND[S]” that controllers accommodate pilots requests (given service to other pilots is not compromised).

Was this the Training server or Expert server?

Even in real life, you’d have a number to call for outright ignoring ATC and landing on another runway than assigned simply because you wanted a greater margin.

No, you don’t ignore ATC instructions. You simply say unable, state the reason for your inability, then make your request. It’s not hard to work with ATC.

In the context of IF ES, land on the runway assigned by ATC. If you will not likely stop before the end of the runway, go around and/or divert.

Once on the ground you can discuss it. But follow ATC instructions or divert only according to available options for diverting from those instructions within the context of IF.

Being explicitly instructed L vs R, it is never optional which of the two to choose (the only way to avoid the instruction is to announce a go-around).

But pilots have the final say irl, in IF Expert Server they don’t. That’s the difference I’m bringing light to.

There are several factors ATC considers when deciding which runway to assign, mainly traffic flow and direction of approach. In expert servers, Controllers prioritize runways that fit both the situation and the pilot’s request, and that is their top priority. However, based on conditions and circumstances, they still have the right to make the final call.
