Why does KLM Asia still exist?

For people who don’t know, in the 1990’s China and Taiwan both placed bans on airlines flying to both of them. To circumvent this, multiple airlines created “Asia” subsidiaries.

However, that ban has since been relaxed and and most subsidiaries no longer exist, with the exception of one, KLM Asia. KLM has continued to maintain it’s fleet of 777’s, keeping the Asia branding on them even through repaints, despite it not being strictly necessary.

There is basically no credible evidence online as to why this still happens (even KLM’s own marketing team don’t know), so I would love to hear and theories or answers anyone may have.

(simple flying made a more detailed video about this).
