Why cruising altitude isn't constant?

Hello!

While using fpltoif.com (really useful by the way!); I noticed that cruising altitude can vary in the middle of the flight:

It’s changing from 40,000ft to 43,000ft, and then, returning back to 40,000ft.
What is the benefit of climbing while cruising?

On very long flights, that are very heavy, your aircraft needs to do a procedure called “Step-Climbing” where you climb to your final cruising altitude little by little, more on that linked below.

What it boils down to is fuel efficiency. The link that Chief post will explain how it’s carried out.

Oh… I apologize. I didn’t knew that it was called “Step Climbing”.
I did try to search on the Forum if a topic already existed, but I was typing “altitude during cruise” in the search bar.

Anyway, thanks!
