When Ferry Flying Goes Wrong

Hello IFC!

Awaiting deliveries of its A320s and A319s, Iran Air, the flag carrier of Iran, has wet-leased an Airbus A321 of Titan Airways.

The pilots flew the aircraft from London Stansted to Tehran Iman Khomeini with a proximately flight time of 5 hours, on the Expert Server, for a positioning flight in Iran.

The flight was going well, until the approach to Iman Khomeini…

At Gate B33, G-POWW is an Airbus A321-211 that is wearing the Titan Airways livery (now IRL, the aircraft was converted to Freighter, but it still operating for Titan)

On the short final Runway 11R at Iman Khomeini, this is the last moment before disasters…

Due to a malfunction of the GPWS, Lack Of Situational Awareness and lack of Crew Resources Management, the pilots forgot to extend the landing gears, resulting in both engines being damaged by scrapping the runway and the rear of the aircraft also damaged.

Both pilots survived, but the aircraft was written-off.

The aftermath:

  • Iran Air plans to sue Titan Air for the loss of the aircraft, leaving the Iranian airline with a sole Boeing 747-200 in its fleet, which is currently in maintenance.

  • Both pilots were suspended from the British airline

What will happen after?

Don’t forget to say how long the airport was closed and how long it took for the aircraft to be removed from the runway.

Also, I still don’t understand how someone can simply forget to lower the landing gear just before landing.
It’s literally the most important step on landing..

Also, don’t you guys occasionally check other cameras such as Normal, Interior Drone 1, Tail, etc… apart from the cockpit when landing?

The airport was closed for 5 hours, the time it took from the aircraft to be removed from the runway (it was a fast operation).

They were focusing on the alignment of the aircraft with the runway’s centreline.

Contributing factor was the failure of the GPWS to alert the pilots of the gear not extended

Another factor was pilots fatigue

So I’m assuming that you purposely did not lower the landing gear and it was intentional just for the plot of the story?

I accidentally failed to lower them, it’s when I checked the exterior of the aircraft after landing that I noticed it (oops moment)

What will happen after is, people will stop being afraid about Boeing, and shift their focus to Airbus :smiling_face_with_horns:
