When do you bring out/take up flaps for TO/Landing

when should I put up/take down the flaps when taking off and landing is there a certain speed i have to bring flaps down/up or whenever i feel like it

I extend flaps when both engines are on and I’m ready to taxi. I start extending my flaps 15 miles out of the airport, haven’t had issues with this method so far.

understood but i’m talking about after you take off are you supposed to reach a certain speed or just whenever you feel like it

After you have a positive rate of climb, and your speed is stable/and or increasing, you can gradually clean up the flaps

(This in-part, also depends on the aircraft you’re flying, and it’s weight)

A rule I use is, when on the A320, I retract the flaps at 180. On the 737s, since I takeoff with Flaps 5, I retract 5 at 180 to 1, and 190 from 1 to 0.

The standard operating procedure for many airlines is to set take-off flaps right after pushback, just before requesting taxi. You can do this along with your flight control checks.

For landing it will depend on the aircraft. Flaps help maintain your speed so that it doesn’t increase as much while descending.

For example, I want to be at 190-220 kts on downwind, maybe around 180 kts on base, and 160-170kts on final. If I am flying the 777-300ER, I will typically have flaps 5 once I’m going 220 which is 15 kts under the limit, then slow down to 200 kts and extend to flaps 15 which is also 15 kts under the limit.

As I turn base I’ll slow down to 180 kts and extend flaps 20, also 15 kts under the limit and as I align runway at final I’ll slow down to 165 kts and extend to flaps 25.

Once I’m at my approach speed…say 145 kts…then I’ll extend the last flap setting (30) which is usually after bringing landing gear down and at about 6-7 nm final.

Those are just examples because I fly the 777 a lot. Once you get used to your aircraft you’ll find the sweet spot, but if you use the general speed suggestions (or requirements if you’re following a chart) then it will give you a better idea of when to extend your flaps.

Okay thank you

When I’m 15nm out

im a crazy person but i recommend near to final

and for takeoff i dont do flaps :sob:

retract flaps at T/O when reached 210 kts and retract flaps when vacated the runway
extend flaps when ready for taxi to runway and on boeing for example on 737 theres a text when u should extend ur flaps on airbus just do it when ur on final approach

I retract my flaps for take off while starting engine 1

I extend them in order for example if I’m flying the Boeing 737MAX8, I like to retract to 5 knots at 210 knots and then fully up at 230 knots

It’s a similar sequence on approach but I also retract to flaps 15 at 190 knots

Bring the gear down around 175 knots, extend to flaps 20 at 170 and than 30/40 at 150
