When a Spotting Trip Turns Out to be a Good Choice | Linz, December 19, 2021

A short disclaimer in advance: Obviously the topic is somewhat related to recent developments in world politics, however, this is not a place to discuss politics - it’s a spotting topic.

Welcome back everyone,

today’s topic includes pictures I didn’t post here for the last 3 months, but now it’s probably a good time to still share them. It will be all about a very special plane - the huge and majestic AN225 Mriya. During the pandemic, it was chartered by various logistic companies in Austria to ship tests, masks and similar stuff to Austria using Linz Airport which thankfully is only 2 hours away from me, so a friend of mine and I decided to go there a few days before christmas to get it off our bucket list - not knowing that it would actually be our last chance spot it - even though the weather forecast was kinda bad, but at least that gave us more freedom to choose our location.

With quite some spotters and “normal” folks around me, I went right to the touchdown spot to pull off some somewhat crazy stuff for a one of a kind airplane. After taking a few normal shots during approach like this one demonstrating the massive span…

…I switched my camera settings quickly to get a few panning shots of the actual touchdown trying to compensate for the lack of contrast.

Since my friend and I decided to split positions, I actually got a shot of mine spotting the landing, which puts the size of this massive plane into perspective.

After landing, I quickly changed my position to get a few face to face shots with the “Dream” as the AN225 is called. One shot showing the large span…

… and one focusing more on the fuselage and the 6(!) engines of this beast.

My friend who was standing on top of the terminal then got some great pics from above when the AN started turning towards its parking position.

But back to my location from where I also spotted the parking maneuver of AN225 with all the tiny-looking people around Mryia.

I hope you liked these pics despite the weather. All I can say is that I’m extremely glad that we did this daytrip to Linz to experience the largest plane in the world for the first, and now also last time.

My Equipment:

Canon EOS 6D Mark II
Canon EOS 80D
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM (99% of pics)
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS II USM (for wide angle pics)

Backup / Old Lenses

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (for the 1% of the cases where I needed a wide angle lens, replaced by the 24-105 now)
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS STM (for the majority of my very old pics, bascially completely replaced by the 100-400 now)

You can follow me on twitter and Instagram to get more shots on a daily basis. Also, keep your eyes open on Flightradar24 where you might see some of my recent shots.

Nice pictures!

You might also be interested in the videos I filmed during spotting. It’s unedited and straight from my phone mounted on my cam, but the sound adds to the experience for sure (even with my shutter sounds)
