What speed should I be when I am

Good evening Lads and gents…

In the series “J-F wants to help” we recently had

Tonight will be the night of which speed should I be when in the tower’s airspace…

First…the easiest…

Departures:

Typical departure speed is between 220 and 250 kt until 10k…rarely departure is a problem…

Arrivals:

A good speed to adopt when no approach to guide your arrival is 230-250kt below 10k.

230kt is good for point merge arc…

210 Kt when under 20-21 NM from the airport will ensure a smooth descent and easy manoeuvres…

Downwind: 190-210 KT when on downwind is nice…monitor other traffic and adjust to follow your sequence…

Base: 180 KT on base will ensure your base turn will be accurate and final ,manoeuvres are smooth and easy.

Final: Depending of aircraft, finals speed vary between 150 and 170 KT

Short final: below 150 KT and landing speed following aircraft.

I’m not a pro, but these speed kept me out of violations and always took me on ground easily and safely…

Plus…it makes the ATC’s job so much easier 😉

Thanks for reading and have a good one folks!

Wonderful guide! I bet this would be very useful to some of the newer members of ES.
