What’s It Like Being On a Long Haul?

I was only like 8 years old so I probably didn’t take up much space anyways haha

True. In first/biz class, you shouldn’t wan the flight to end

The craziest flight i done, was from Copenhagen to Zurich, Zurich to Hong Kong, Hong Kong to Bangkok, Bangkok to Koh Samui. Land one place and take a other flight 1-2 hours later 😅

Long Hauls are usually enjoyable for me, my most recent one was in october coming back from London. It was on a BA A380, and I was on the top deck. The food was great (Even though I was in economy) and the service was fantastic! They even gave my sister 3 ice creams each! You’ll have plenty of movies to watch on the plane, I watched Infinity War for the first time, and a few other movies. Thats the reason I joined BAVA too!

I will say, I’ve had some horror stories too. I flew economy IAD-Copenhagen on an SAS A340-300. It was about 10 degrees too hot, and we all really noticed it because the flight was completely full. The entertainment screens weren’t working, and my seat malfunctioned and wouldn’t recline. I thought I was smart by getting the aisle, only to be interrupted at all hours of the night by passengers rear-ends hitting my face as they queued for the lavatory. Basically 8 hours trapped in an overheated, overcrowded, smelly flying bus.

I’d say your enjoyment of a long haul flight depends on what I call your ‘entertainment threshold’, as such. Some people simply cannot sit down and do nothing; they need films, games, etc. to keep themselves busy. Some people (like myself) can simply sit down, plug in some good music and gaze out the window for ten hours. The views are sublime (even if you’re crossing an ocean), and having some songs to listen to always makes the flight seem much shorter than it actually is.

If you need to keep yourself entertained, there is a ton of stuff to do, but it gets quite repetitive if you’re sat watching film after film for a ten hour flight. Try and appreciate the fact that you’re whizzing through the air at 500mph, 40000ft above the earth, and take a look out the window. It sounds quite poetic, but it can really make the time fly (pun not intended) if you’re getting a little bored.

Does the A380 have Economi upstairs? Always thought First Class and Business class only was Upstairs

In the very very back of the plane.

Wauw. I didnt know that, i only have flown on the Lufthansa A380, and i was trying to get upstairs but it was locked ( i was sitting down stairs )

The way it goes for me, sit down and be comfortable for the first hours then adjust my seating position and rest on each side of my rear end. Yes it can go numb on some flights that don’t have great padding. I watch downloaded movies from Netflix or sky go usually and use the IFE to watch movies. Then the food comes along and it’s awful so I eat like one part of it then fob the rest off to someone else (not a dog). Then I drink tea while watching movies. Sorry for the honest review 😘

I’ve been twice to New York, once in VS premium economy, and the other time I’m BA first. With first, it’s all interesting for the first hour, but then I’m like, I can’t sleep, how many more hours??? Then in premium economy I sleep extremely well.

Then in March 2018 I flew to Shanghai in VS Upper Class. I sort of just ate all the crisps at the bar and then watched a film or two, went to sleep for about three hours, and then got bored, with about 4 hours left of the flight.

So long-hauls are perfect in Premium economy, with economy, I think the seats are too small, but VS is the best I think. In business and first, they give you lots of space, but I can’t sleep in those seats for some reason😕

My longest was 8.5 hours and I mainly just looked out the window at the scenery around me. It went by pretty quick. When I was over the ocean it wasn’t as fun but still I was on a United 747 right before they were retired so that was cool by itself. Btw the flight was KORD-PHNL.

Ahh, Long Hauls, they are my favorites to fly in Infinite Flight, ah yes, yes… WAITReal World Aviation???… ohhhh… 😐🤨

Good Night 😴

IRL, the plane takes off and I doze off for the next 12hrs to come. I mean literally, what it’s like is, you pull out your phone and record the Pushback, Taxi and Takeoff and Climb up to 20000ft then just Sleep. No Food, that can wait, no restroom, have no time for that. Just sleep, no movies. Just sleep. I do ask for Ice Cream as desert and usually they do serve whatever they have left over from Business Class and Premium Economy. The trick always works. I just simply state, I need to freshen up my taste buds and they say sure, we’ll see what we have. Works on LH, QR, SK, BA and TG ;)

But yeah, Eat, Sleep and watch Movies, and leftover Ice Cream 😋🍨

On a more serious note, I feel that the thrill of flying across globe from one continent to another is just amazing. Like I get to see so many different airplanes, airlines, an people alike. Many pilots. I usually board early to get a chance to briefly talk with the pilots and they explain their plans for this flight and the route, etc… :)

Then there’s the rare occasion of seeing a B747 at 36000ft, which just slightly below your altitude ✈

Just an advice, don’t decide to stay awake most of the time like I did. I was on a 14h one, and I decided to make a marathon of movies/series I liked (also because we departed at 12:00).

Usually, night flights are way better than the ones departing around 12:00, where you can’t get decent sleep (at least I can’t). At that flight, I slept two hours and ended up bored because there wasn’t more movies I liked.

Don’t make the same mistakes I did. Basically, get some sleep, don’t rely to much on the IFE, and don’t eat too fast, otherwise you won’t feel very good. But it’s amazing to be on a Long Haul flight.

I like flying in general, not just long hauls, mostly because I find it very relaxing (unlike most of the population). I tend to use my time wisely and do not connect to onboard WiFi to increase my productivity. I usually write essays on those flights, read or relax.

However, if you have nothing better to do, I suggest pulling an all-nighter the day before so you can get a good night’s sleep on the plane (even if it’s a day-time flight). I find that after about 5 hours things start to get boring if I’m not asleep or being productive. Although binge-watching Netflix is nice, I do usually get tired of doing so; sleeping is the best next alternative for me.

I’ve flown a lot of long haul flights in my life, my estimate is 30 (I consider long haul to be 6hr plus). I always look forward to long haul flying (and I fly economy, other than premium economy a couple of times), and I have a great time. I watch tons of films and enjoy the views. Also, I speak to cabin crew or go chill out in the galley and chat to people. Flying long haul is always good, unless it’s turbulent. I flew to Seychelles recently and we had about 8hrs of mild to moderate turbulence, reminiscent of being on a boat. An overnight flight on an empty aircraft and I couldn’t sleep at all due to the bumpiness!

Also, if you’re nervous about flying long haul I’d recommend drinking LOADS of fluids whilst on board, as it can make the experience horrible if you’re dehydrated and it often leads to airsickness. Try and walk around on the plane as you can get quite sore from being in the same position for so long. And if you want to avoid turbulence sit as close to the wings as possible, it’s much smoother there :-)

PS - I would never ever recommend pulling an all nighter the day before - I did that once before flying home from Colombo on an all day flight and it was dreadful. I couldn’t sleep on the plane as it was very light on board and I couldn’t get comfortable enough. I prefer to keep myself wide awake and entertained as I know I’m able to do that, rather than bank on hopefully sleeping throughout

(If anyone is questioning why I’ve travelled so much at a young age, in the UK we generally fly further than Americans do, and I have family around the world too).

Someone mentioned food options earlier. I’ve flown on a few different airlines, and so far nobody has come close to the food offered by Air France. I was completely amazed at just how decent airline food could be, and I was in economy.

Back on topic, usually anything more than two or three hours in length, I try to upgrade to at least a seat with a bit more legroom, and keep myself entertained with a movie or two. Or just sleep!

I find food on flights to be very boring and they don’t improve my long haul experience. BA long haul food is dire in my opinion. SriLankan airlines offer very good food in economy, however, no matter which airline breakfast is always disgusting. Snacks are vital on all long haul flights if you want to ensure good food. (As is vaseline - you get very dry on planes!)

Also drinking a lot of water, I learned that the hard way just drinking Diet Coke on the plane 😂😂

I enjoy my long haul flights usually 8 or 9 a year and a mix between economy, premium econ and businesses are always fun. Hydration is key and i now bring a water bottle and fill up in the sky club before boarding so that I have something to drink on the flight. For me the most important thing is the right seat. I prefer a 2 seat config and work to try and find that and usually im moving seats up until the last minute so that I can fly with as much room (especially in economy).
