Many airplanes acquire nicknames from one or more of their characteristics, an event, a form of entertainment (such as movies), or exist as part of the aircraft designation created by the manufacturer/operator.
Military aircraft are often given nicknames. These include Fighting Falcon/Viper (General Dynamics F-16), Raptor (Lockheed Martin F-22), Lancer/Bone (Rockwell B-1), and Fat Albert (Lockheed Martin C-130H).
Airliners have also obtained nicknames. For example, the Boeing 747 has earned the title “Queen of the Skies”.
A few interesting nicknames I have come across are Sasquatch (Boeing 777), Ferrari (Boeing 757), Sully’s Ark (Airbus A320), Flying Forehead (Airbus A380), Irish Concorde (Shorts 360), Concorde-Ski (Tupolev TU-144), Flying Speed Brake (Lockheed Constellation), and, my personal favorite, Nighthawk (Lockheed Martin F-117).
