What is a VOR?

what is a vor?? i’ve checked most topics and they are not very clear. what are they and how do you use them

Short and sweet answer, A radio that acts kinda like a beacon that planes can hone in to like a GPS.

The best way I can explain a VOR is that it is a roundabout in the sky. So similar to the way you’d go around a roundabout to get on a different road, you’ll follow one airway into a VOR to either stay on the same one or connect to a different airway.

Hone means locate, focus etc. It’s not an aviation specific word.
