What exactly is ATIS/D-ATIS

May sound like a stupid question, but i still dont exactly know what it is or/and what it does.

All i know is it hives information or smth about a arrival airport?

So basically ATIS is an ATC message or frequency to inform the pilots of weather and the procedures to taxi and stuff like that

Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS) in Aviation - Aeroclass.org.
Atis is basically like a broadcast informing pilots of stuff. ATIS is a voice broadcast. D-ATIS is an improved version of ATIS and I’m pretty sure D-ATIS is a robot speaking

  • Departure information includes the name of the airport, indicator, and active runway, among other information found in departure messages.
  • Weather observation, including surface wind direction and speed, and any significant variations in the present weather. This is usually possible when surface wind sensors are in place. If surface wind sensors are not available, then this information is taken from other weather observation systems.
  • Significant runway surface conditions.
  • Significant meteorological phenomena with operational significance for take-off, climb out, or any other flight stage.
  • Temperature (Dew point) and air temperature.
  • Cloud conditions under current weather.
  • Transitional altitude and transitional level, which refer to the highest minimum sector altitude.
  • Altimeter setting.
  • Vertical visibility.
  • Comments and any other relevant information

Atis basically informs the pilots of departing and arriving runways.
It can also include certain Sids and Star procedures at the discretion of the controller.

Departure and approach are separate. ATIS or Automatic Terminal Information System is a continuous broadcast about important information like weather, runways in use, etc at an airport. It is a separate frequency from everything else so that all aircraft can tune to that, get the important information, and ATC doesn’t have to tell every aircraft the winds or runway to plan for.

D-ATIS or Digital ATIS is just the same thing delivered as text instead of audio unless infinite flight as a unique definition for that.
