I know this might be a controversial topic but does continue as filed mean just your heading or heading and altitude? I just flew out of SBGR and the controller told me to continue as filed after a few vectors. Then about a minute later the controller said altitude your discretion. Just wanted to know what that meant. Thanks!

continue as filed simply means you can go back to following your flight plan.
As for that second command, âaltitude at your discretionâ is pretty self-explanatory: youâll be able to manage your own altitude from that point onwards. >:3

The correct RL phraseology for this is âResume own navigationâ usually preceded by a direct routing.

âContinue as filedâ means that you can continue on your flight plan, and use altitude at your discretion-whereas âresume own navigationâ doesnât allow you to continue your FPL, but not change your altitude, I believe. If unsure, always check the user guide.

Incorrect. Continue as filed is used when the pilot is to return to and/or continue on their filed Flightplan. Sometimes this includes a heading towards an upcoming leg and this should be maintained until approaching the leg it will intercept at.
Resume own navigation is for VFR General Aviation traffic and VFR General Aviation Flight following when there isnât a Flightplan or no expiation for it to be followed further.

Is âcontinue as filedâ even a standard phraseology? âResume own navigationâ is. I donât see this being specified for VFR in 7110.65 and it is clearly stated as a phraseology to terminate radar vectoring.

From what Iâve heard in ATC transmissions (in Asia, at least), I think they say something closer to âcontinue via SIDâ or âcontinue via procedureâ. In fact, I swear Iâve heard Center ATC instruct IFR aircrafts to âdirect to xxx, resume own navigationâ following previous radar vectors for an offset
These are correct and consistent with the 7110.65. These are, however, not continue as filed. If anything, they are continue as previously cleared.
This has nothing to do with cancelling radar service though. You can refer to 7110.65 on vectoring.
For the purposes of Infinite Flight, Metier is absolutely correct (here):
Continue as filed = join flight plan at the most sensible leg. (ATC should attempt to point you towards your flight plan prior to sending the âcontinue as filedâ command.)
Resume own navigation = VFR aircraft can resume flying however theyâd like to, flight plan or not.
I raised up the RL phraseology equivalent to the CAF in Infinite Flight, which contrary to what Metier said, is correct.

I donât disagree with you that IRL phraseology by the 7110 is different. Just to keep this in the proper lens, we are referring to Infinite Flight SOPs and not IRL.
