So I have asked for Christmas that I want a camera for plane spotting and the problem is that I don’t know what kind of camera I want so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for what camera I should get?

I will talk as a Nikon user.
I use the D3400 of nikon, it’s the starter DSLR of the brand (a newer version is available.)
Anything above will be awesome but where you can make a great difference is with the lenses. I’d say, don’t go for anything under 70mm. I used to spot with a 18-55mm and it was really hard to get interesting final results.
Now I have a 18-105mm and it’s already great for airliners but a bit short for biz jets.
The ones I’m thinking of getting next are either the tamron 70-300mm or the nikon 70-300mm.
So yeah here are my 2 cents on the subject.

Like the original poster I don’t have a camera but have always been interested. What’s with the camera lense? How can it be like 50 - 100mm? Is this just something you understand when you get a camera or are you able to explain?
I didn’t know myself until now, here is what is said on the Nikon website :
Focal length, usually represented in millimeters (mm), is the basic description of a photographic lens. It is not a measurement of the actual length of a lens, but a calculation of an optical distance from the point where light rays converge to form a sharp image of an object to the digital sensor or 35mm film at the focal plane in the camera. The focal length of a lens is determined when the lens is focused at infinity.
Lens focal length tells us the angle of view —how much of the scene will be captured—and the magnification —how large individual elements will be. The longer the focal length, the narrower the angle of view and the higher the magnification. The shorter the focal length, the wider the angle of view and the lower the magnification.
The Canon Rebel series makes a good budget spotting camera.

On the higher end, there’s the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II. I reacently bought one of these used for a good price.

Essentially, it zooms in and out. The higher the number, the more zoomed in it is.

I personally use and recommend an iPhone 6 commonly found at Best Buy and equivalent online retailers for $129.99
