VNAV question

I am inbound for the IFVARB event, but I am still unsure about one thing: I understood it like that, that the VNAV calculates your TOD for you (the distance on the VNAV activation button). On there it says 600nm till TOD, but the first point of the STAR I filed is 12000ft below me and only 500nm away. How does this make sense?
edit: I may have the solution: Are the heights on the STAR the minimum alt you can fly but you can fly higher too? That would at least make sense
Correct me if I am wrong

Yes 24000ft and I am at 36000ft
(I added something in my post could you check if this is the solution?)

This depends (in my experience you can only tell when using charts), but the issue with VNAV is unrelated as far as I am aware as VNAV treats them as necessary targets.

No idea, sorry!
