When should vnav be selected after takeoff

I would arm VNAV about 1-3 minutes before your TOD (Top Of Descent).

Adding on from what Daniel has mentioned above, be sure to only arm VNAV when you are active and at your device.
If you arm VNAV after takeoff and say you get delayed getting back to your device your aircraft will descend on its own and you could incur overspeed violations and also violations from active IFATC if you are not active and following any of their instructions. So only arm VNAV when you are at your device ready to begin your descent.
