Are you thinking of Virtual Airlines/Organizations?
If so, these are user created, often to mimic real world airlines. Joining these organizations is a way to enhance your experience in IF if it is your kind of thing. Often times virtual airlines (VAs) will have their own career progression system that allows you to rise through the ranks by completing more flights. Some VAs will host fly ins/outs or special career mode events. Most VAs require you to complete and log at least one flight a month through the organizations own portal to avoid being kicked out for inactivity.
If this is something that seems intriguing, then I would highly recommend looking up your favorite airline to see if there is a Virtual Organization that you can join!
