I remember when this happened. It was all over the news the next day. The news outlets did not give a good description of the event that took place but this videos shows exactly how disastrous this would have been. You’ll notice that both planes’ callsigns over the radio will sound very alike, which is what contributed to this very close call. Take a look:
I remember watching this on Youtube 😕
I live in Illinois and fly out of Midway all the time. Very scary when it hits close to home :/
That was way to close. Luckily the controller realized what was happening just in time.
And the fact that Ground advised both Pilots of the same sounding Callsign, and this still happened.
“We got to call company” what does that mean? 🤔
Amazing how calm the tower controller was after telling the Delta flight to abort.
Whenever something like this happens, Im pretty sure they have to let Southwest (there bosses) know what happened. I believe thats what that means.
Delta 1328 was on 4R, why would he respond to takeoff clearance on 31C? Although the callsigns were similar, that moment had nothing to do with it. The delta pilots need a hearing check.
Yes you are right, but though we can hear them clearly on this video, who knows what the Delta pilots heard. There could have been a broken transmission on Delta’s end of the radio. And maybe they didn’t hear the Runway callout. All they could probably hear was their callsign (Southwest’s), and then cleared for Takeoff.
Reminds me of playground…
