Velocity Vector?

What is this, and why do so many people hate it? P.S. I don’t know if this should go in general or RWA, I’m not sure if it’s just in IF.

It’s that little circle thing in the middle which points to where your aircraft is expected to go with the current configuration (flaps, speed, wind etc.) Some people hate it because it makes piloting too easy. Imagine flying without that and just the runway ahead of you vs with the velocity vector aimed precisely at the runway touchdown spot. Which do you think is easier? I’m currently aware that only the 787 has it in their HUD’s.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. It does make flying a lot easier. Do they have these on real planes, or is it just the 787?

From what I know, Fighter and military aircraft have them and been having them for a long time, quite needed if you want to land a fighter jet on a moving carrier in the sea. From commercial I’m only aware of the 787.

Only the 787 has it in commercial aviation. Its sort of a ‘cheats way to land’. Live displays will get rid of the happily, and then IF will become a proper sim. 😊

So without the vector , can anyone please instruct me on landing when there’s a crosswind ?

You do it they do it in real life.

I’m looking forward for when the velocity vector is removed, live is going to be so funny. Barley anyone will be able to land.

Try flying without the hud, or landing with out it. Its a lot better.

I hate the velocity vector, takes away the skill of landing.

Maybe add an option where you can enable/disable it

I would love that.

I have never use it

That’s what flight school and all those type ratings and instrument ratings and simulator hours are for 😁

You can already do that. On the HUD type selector menu, select HUD-2, it gets rid of the HUD.

It’s not in IF, but in real life, pilots have an instrument that tells them of the alignment of their aircraft. This is what they use for crosswind landing. Pilots will also use the ILS.

Edit: Instrument is called a turn coordinator.

I have done that, but it gets rid of my speed, map etc. Its what I do, but its not a great workaround.

I don’t really mind it. It’s so small it’s easy to ignore. I also like keeping the HUD up so I can get my airspeed and MSL easier, along with glide slope and localizer for landing.

So without the HUD…does that mean there is no guidance for landing ?how do u land without the ILS ? Thanks.

The ILS is still on the flight display. Have you never been/seen a cockpit before?

MaxSez: Give me a brake: The HUD is a modern marvel. The “Bulls Eye” “Velocity Vector” combination are valuable acuity prompts. Learn to use them. In IMC their life savers. Try flying an airliner at night or under the hood without them. Wanna fly with your eyeballs and a six pack fly GA. Fly like a Pro. Good Luck.

@Stevetong… MaxSez: Hit the books Steve. Learn the difference between IMC & VMC. ILS is a Recovery/Landing Aid.
