A couple of days ago, I was lucky to be able to photograph one of these USAF Antarctic C130’s at Christchurch, as there summer operations get underway. These planes help shuttle crew, supplies and equipment down to Antarctica, and are also equipped with JATO (Jet Assisted Takeoff)!
I grew up in a house about 6km away from Christchurch airport, and was lulled to sleep many times by the endless drone of the old Hercules engines being tested.
There was usually a Starlifter there also during the season, which was a highlight to catch taking off.
