United Airlines UA76 Emergency Squawk 7700

Tracked flight UA76 on Flightradar24. The United Airlines 757 took off from Belfast heading to New York but shortly later appeared to call an emergency and squawked 7700. The aircraft the entered holding patterns over the coast of Liverpool (most likely to dump fuel) before landing at Birmingham at about 12:30Z. Does anyone know the reason for the emergency?

Yeah, maybe flying over the Irish Sea gave the pilots more time and distance to dump fuel if they had enough control to fly a bit further

Hydraulic failure I think

Oh right, thanks for finding out

They may have chosen EGCC as well because they can get maintenance there if necessary.

Headed to Newark*, not New York.

I don’t believe 757s have an option to dump fuel because they can easily land at the MTOW and only require an overweight landing inspection. They were most likely going through checklists to see if they could resolve the problem.

And burning off some fuel to try to avoid overweight isn’t a bad idea.
