United Airlines to Offer Free Starlink Wi-Fi Across Its Fleet

united^

In a significant technological leap, United Airlines has announced that it will soon offer free Wi-Fi on over 1,000 of its planes, powered by SpaceX’s Starlink satellite service. This agreement, the largest of its kind in the airline industry, promises to deliver high-speed internet to passengers on both domestic and international flights. United plans to begin testing the service in early 2025, with full-scale implementation rolling out over the next few years.

What This Means for Passengers

The Starlink service will allow passengers to stream, game, shop, and browse the internet at speeds comparable to ground-based connections. This free Wi-Fi will be available both on seatback screens and personal devices, providing a seamless experience from gate to gate. In addition, the upgrade will enhance communication capabilities for pilots, flight attendants, and technicians, likely improving overall flight operations.

By offering this service, United aims to differentiate itself from competitors, further enhancing the in-flight experience for its customers. This move marks a major step forward for connectivity in the skies, setting a new standard for U.S. airlines.

Shocked… but it’s time to evolve

This kinda adds some competition with Delta, as they have free wifi for T-Mobile users.

Starlink is probably the fastest WiFi I have ever used while being in the sky. Was able to first try it on JSX and I was genuinely surprised that I was able to FaceTime someone while in the air with very little connection issues.

Glad to see another airline using Starlink

I was able to experience Starlink on one of Hawaiians A330s. It was amazing how fast and well it worked!

Isn’t it crazy that United is charging $10 for non-members and they are now starting up free wifi? Will they lose money from this?
