United Airlines Forcibly Removes Passenger

I feel really sorry for that man, I also don’t get why they have to drag him across the floor! I mean isn’t that against his rights? I’m pretty sure that isn’t allowed.

Also from reading the article it wasn’t United, it was the security that dragged them off, although united did request to have the passenger leave the plane.

The pictures of the aftermath are even more disturbing, the man is bleeding from the mouth and there’s even a video of him shouting he “wants to go home”, very sad stuff.

Appalled! Feel bad for bad for that guy, he shouldn’t have to leave if he paid for the ticket. The consequences of Airlines overbooking😔

I was about to book a flight with United to go to New York in September, but I won’t now. I/we (my family) will pay £50 more to fly AA. Don’t want to pay people to disregard passengers that badly.

United is taking a beating in PR issues lately. First with the ridiculous tights issue, now this. They should change their slogan: “Fly the Not-So-Friendly Skies”

I have a flight booked with them for July going to Newark. I’m a big imposing dude, they better have more than two officers or my $800 in crisp new one dollar bills lol. ;)

I’m just joking about the officers and money, by the way.

The proper procedure would be to ask all aboard to give up their set for compensation and if not enough volunteer increase the compensation.

I would like to remind everyone that United and the flight crew does have the right to forcibly remove passengers from flights who are not complying with crewmember instructions. The UA standard is 0-400% of the fare paid for IDB compensation, so I would say that man is getting a decent deal.

Airlines also have the right to refuse carriage for cause when you ticked the “I agree to the terms and conditions of sale and contract of carriage” box when booking a ticket. That man signed a legal contract and is trying to get out of the obligations that he legally agreed to. So law enforcement got involved and removed him from the flight. If the man behaved like an adult and did not try to be “the tough guy”, the incident would’ve been resolved in a much more amicable manner.

$800 was the last offer, which is pretty good since the US has pretty stringent laws regarding IDB. Passengers in other jurisdictions are not so lucky, I heard someone got compensated the equivalent of US$195 for a 12-hour delay on a long haul segment.

While wrong, I do think we do not have the full story. I have been on other airlines that will have a computer “randomly” pick someone, or at least they threaten it. I have seen multiple airlines bump someone who was flying standby for someone who had a paid ticket. Not defending their actions, just saying I think the whole story needs to come out. Nobody should be dragged off. I’m 6’6", I would like to see them try to get me out. I have a hard enough time locking my knees in the seat so I cant imagine someone pulling.

On the other hand, they have a new seating class.

I read somewhere that he actually broke a federal law and won’t be able to sue if he wanted too. Is that true? United didn’t handle this well, they should’ve prioritised on who can stay instead of random.

Surely a decent amount of time went by before security was called and nobody else stood up to give up their seat?

I personally feel that flying has turned into a very selfish business from both the airlines and passengers view points.

It was headed to my city, too. UA shouldn’t have handled it this way.

Well having recently flown on United I’m not to surprised about this. Sooner or later something like this had to happen with all of the airlines overbooking. I feel really sorry about the guy who was removed. I’m not sure if this is completely legal or not, (someone please tell me) I just hope some sort of legal action is taken against United. This is just unacceptable for an airline to do.

Agree. I was flying American once and was in an oversold position. I was traveling for work so I didnt mind spending a few extra hours at the lounge for a voucher. Come to find out it was oversold for a family so I was glad to give my seat for them to stay together.
