Unexpected but not Unwelcome

Flying Vikings

For all of you expecting another B-1 spotting topic… I have bad news. The B-1s have begun their return to Ellsworth :frowning:
What this means is you may see one, maybe two more Bone topics, and then they will stop entirely! That is right, they will be completely gone in a month and I will likely be posting little to no spotting topics from here on out.

On a more positive note, when I was out Lancer hunting yesterday, I caught a wild Viking that had made its way up to KRDR from the Twin Cities. They did quite a few patterns, giving me some awesome angles!

Luckily, I just managed to catch two of them!

Go check out my sneak peek on Rockwell B1-B “Lancer”

Spectacular photos.

Why are the B-1s stopping operations from KRDR and are returning? I always thought that you lived near a B-1 base.

I didn’t realize they were headed back already, I thought they’d be there for a hot minute. Did you talk with any of the crews, were they hotel living for the duration and could they bring their families up there?

Really great photos! That last one in particular, the smoke pattern is an awesome visual footprint of the aerodynamics!

Thank you!

So they are originally from Ellsworth, SD, but Ellsworth’s runway was being lengthened for their incoming B-21 raiders. They sent the B-1s up to Grand Forks until the runway construction was completed, and it would seem as though they have finished :frowning:

Well they’ve been here for roughly a year, so long enough for the runway to be completed.
The crews appeared to be spread out, living in hotels on/near campus and I assume some were put up in the base itself. I have no information regarding families moving.

Thank you!! Every pass was nice and smoky but I tried my best to pull a shot with visible vortices.
The coolest part was every time they flew overhead I’d get hit by their wake turbulence for a good minute

Unfortunately those will still be an eight hour drive from here. Not exactly feeling the need to do that for some baby B-2s :joy:
