Recently made it into Grade 3 and I know most of the stuff cus I did a bit of research and utilized my time efficiently in the training server but I’m still learning new things and there are certain nuances that have to be addressed.
Question 1:
When Tower gives me takeoff clearance and tells me to change my frequency, what frequency do I have to tune in if no departure frequency is present? Like this happens to me most of the time. I know if there’s center you tune into that, but can I tune into approach and just check in and follow my FPL? Like what’s the most realistic thing to do here? (I just wanna avoid violations and not clutter the space of the Air Traffic Controller)
Question 2:
Recently heard someone say that when you’re landing and you exit the runway, you don’t have to stop at the hold short line, like you just keep going while you’re tuned into ground frequency. I usually wait and then ask Ground to lemme taxi to a parking. But I hurry if I know an aircraft is landing on the same runway on which I just land so I don’t interrupt the traffic.
Tbh Idk if this is the correct board or not for this, so sorry if I’m in the wrong place.
Welcome to the community, and congratulations for reaching grade 3!
If you have frequency change approved without a departure frequency, you can just tune out of the Tower frequency to none and continue your flight plan. You may also stay on tower if you want, though it may be noisy.
After landing, you should continue taxi while tuning to the ground and requesting, but please make sure that you don’t rush too quick and cause conflict with others - no one would like to see that. You can taxi as instructed after receiving a clearance.
if only ground/tower is present, and you receive a “frequency change approved, good day.” message, you can simply tune out of the frequency. Or remain in it, if you wish: us ifatc can simply swipe out your atc logs.
that’s also correct: you don’t necessarily need to stop at the hold points when exiting the runway from a landing. To make things move quicker, some atc may prefer that.
also, to make things clearer, when exiting the runway, NEVER stop before the hold short. If you ever need to stop, do so AFTER crossing it, if you ever need to stop.
As a controller, this is literally one of my biggest pet peeves. Please do not stop before the hold short line when half your aircraft is literally still on the runway. As long as you completely vacate the runway and contact ground soon afterwards, everything is peachy
Welcome to community and expert server! We are excited to see you here. As an IFATC member, I would strongly suggest you study this topic bellow once you will be ready to fly in to a busy airspace.
Hold short markings consist of two solid yellow lines and two dashed yellow lines across the taxiway.
If you’re approaching the solid lines, you must stop before the marking and wait for ATC clearance to cross or enter the runway.
If you’re approaching the dashed lines, you’re exiting the runway, so continue taxiing past the marking. Don’t stop on or before the dashed lines unless ATC specifically tells you to.
Just a small question, you said when you depart you just tune out right? But what if Center frequency is there (cus center handles everything; both departing and arriving traffic).
I read the whole manual that you directed me towards and it was really helpful.
If there is centre present you need to tune in. They might tell you FCA (frequency change approved) then you can tune out.
If there is Departure frequency present - you have to tune in to that right after takeoff and “Check in” for IFR flight or request FF (flight following) for VFR flight.
Some airports Do not have Departure frequency and a radar controller will carry out roles of both Approach and Departure. If Approach is present, Tower will tell you whether to contact approach or FCA.
For the airspace altitudes of each, see the post above in my previous message. Let me know if you have any more questions!
1. If you are assigned a frequency, switch to the instructed frequency. If no frequency is assigned and Center is not online, you may leave the Tower frequency at your discretion. If no frequency is assigned but Approach is online, do notswitch to the Approach frequency.
2. After landing, provided safe separation from other aircraft is maintained, continue taxiing while requesting taxi clearance from Ground. If you need to cross another runway immediately after landing, stop before the solid holding position marking and remain there until you receive runway crossing clearance.
