The first Savannah Municipal Airport was opened on September 20, 1929. In 1932, the City named it Hunter Field. In 1940, the Army Air Corps was saying if a war started they would seize control over the airport. In response the City of Savannah decided to break ground on a new airport. Three 3,600-foot runways were constructed. In 1942 before the completion of the airfield, the U.S. Army Air Corps took over the new facility. The Air Corps named the airfield Chatham Field and used it until the end of World War II as a bomber base and crew training base for B-24 bombers as well as fighter aircraft.
In 1948 the airport was turned over to the Georgia Air National Guard and went through several changes. In 1958 a new passenger terminal started construction. And in 1962 they brought one of the runways to 9,000 feet. In 1965 the Jets finally arrived at Savannah. Delta airlines started operating flights using the DC9-10
Over the coming years it was shaped into what we see today. Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport
