History
Early History (Pre 1970)
- Construction of then “New Haven Municipal Airport” began in 1929, and the airport was opened to the public just less than 2 years after in August 1931. Li-Con Airways was the first to serve the airport starting in 1933 as a passenger and mail air-service up until fall 1934 when it’s service was entirely replaced by American Airlines as a stop-over on flights between New York Municpal/Idlewild (Now JFK) and Boston.
- American Airlines served the airport until 1960. That year, Alleghney Airlines and their regional subsidiary pushed out AAL and began serving the airport with BAC one-elevens.
- In 1961, the airport was rename to “Tweed New Haven Airport” to honor the airport’s first manager, Mr. John H. Tweed!
- Eastern Airlines served the airport between 1948 and 1970, and briefly between 1972 and 1974 with their B727 and DC9-30, operating a mixed schedule to Baltimore, Washington-DCA, Boston, Miami, and Atlanta.
1970 - 2000
- New Haven Airways began service in 1978, operating a hub at HVN until 1985 with a fleet of EMB 110’s, DHC-6’s and Short 360’s to many cities across New England and the Mid-Atlantic regions including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Boston
- During this time, USAir Express began service to New Haven from Philadelphia, Pittsburg, and Washington DC with a wide array of aircraft including the Dornier 328 and Beechcraft 1900
- United Airlines made their debut between 1985-86 with a regional codeshare they operated with Air Wisconsin to Chicago-O’hare on the Bae 146
- Among the big airlines, a large number of smaller airlines operated flights to New Haven, including Continental Express, Northwest Airline, TW Express (TWA), and Ocean Airlines.
- Service dwindled here and there with many airlines leaving, some returning and soon after leaving again throughout the 1990s.
21st Century
- Comair (Operating as Delta connection) been thrise daily service to Cincinnati in 2004 with the CRJ2, operating until January 2006
- Pan Am Clipper Connection operated for a short time in 2007 at HVN flying to a few destinations around New England using a small fleet of Jet Stream 31 Aircraft
- After Pan Am left, US Airways Express was only airline to offer service to New Haven. They operated a variable fleet of regional aircraft including the Dash-8 100, and CRJ’s (All 3 variants) to Philadelphia Int’l. After the merge between US Airways and American, American maintained service to the airport from PHL, and added a flight to charlotte in 2018. Operational conflicts throughout the early 2020s eventually led AA to cease all operations at the airport.
The Rise of Avelo
- Houston based Low-cost airline Avelo announced in May 2021 that they’d be opening up an east coast hub at HVN with a fleet of then 3 B737-700’s to 6 destinations in Florida! Over the last 3 years, they have expanded to 25 cities with both the -700 and -800, including San Juan PR, Washington Dulles, Chicago Midway, Wilmington NC, and Traverse City!
Terminal Information
New Haven airport currently operates 3 Terminal gates and 2 remote airline parking spots, all used by Avelo. The passenger terminal is comprised of 2 separate buildings… 1 being for departing passengers and 1 for arriving passengers. Fun Fact - The arrivals building is home to the original ATC tower!
This is all reflected very accurately in Infinite Flight, thanks to the amazing work of IFAET member @Rhys_V!
For more information regarding IRL operations of the terminal, I’d recommend visiting the airport website → https://flytweed.com
