History
Early History (1900 - 1950)
- The town of Jackson was incorporated in 1914. From then until 1930, dozens of small dirt strips existed around Teton County, mostly used for scenic 2-4 person flights and mail flights that would come up on weekly basis from eastern Idaho and Utah.
- The airport, where it sits in present day was established as an airfield in the 1930s. Within this decade, the first passenger terminal was built. At the time, it was no more than a big log cabin with a wind sock, fuel station, and a gravel runway.
- Western Airlines began the first commercial service to Jackson in 1941 on their DC3. This service connected Jackson to West Yellowestone, Idaho Falls, and Logan UT, with continuing service to their hub in Salt Lake City. Throughout the 40s and 50s, the DC3 service was join with DC6 and Convair 240 flights.
- In 1943, the airport was declared a national monument, and became part of Grand Teton National Park in 1950.
1951 - 1980
- At some point in the 1950s, a crosswind dirt runway was added to the existing main gravel that ran nne - ssw. (I cant find an exact date, but all information I did find pointed to the 1950s)
- In the late 50s, the first perminant passenger terminal was built. This building has been expanded every decade since.
- The early 60s saw the first asphalt tarmac, passenger access road, and parking lots be built.
- Also in the early 60s, the original Frontier Airlines began DC3 and Convair 580 service to Jackson from Salt Lake City, Billings, Riverton - Denver and for a very brief time, Idaho Falls.
- Upon the completion of Teton Villages’ aerial tram in 1965 and 3 original chair lifts, the airport saw a massive spike in passenger number which hasnt stop growing. Since than JAC has been Wyomings’ busiest airport.
- airport board was created which was a joint venture with the town of Jackson and Teton county.
- By 1975, a full asphalt taxiway (named Alpha) had been built, running parallel to runway 18/36. Also by then, the terminal was expanded again in antisipation of rising passenger numbers, an employee parking lot was added north of the terminal, a brand new 100 tie-down GA ramp was finished along side new T-hangars, and an airport operations building was built south of the terminal.
- In 1978, contruction began on a brand new airport administration office about 100 ft south of the terminal. It was completed in the summer of 1980, just in time for a new terminal expansion project to start in massive antisipation for the Jet Age to arrive in the valley in 1981!
1981 - 2000
- The terminal expansion that started in 1980 was finished within a year, which brought a new resturant, two state of the art baggage carosels, 3 new passenger gates, airline ticketing hall and a new baggage handling area.
In June 1981, Frontier made local and state headlines when they brought the first Jetliner to Jackon Hole! A B737-200 from Denver Stapelton, marking a major milestone in the airports history. - In 1983, Western Airlines followed suit and began bring their 737-200s and -300s to Jackson for a few summer seasons until they merged with Delta in 1987.
- During the winters seasons of 85’-86’, 86’-87’ and 87’-88, Southwest Airlines operated 737-200 charter flights to Jackson from Las Vegas, Denver Stapelton, Houston Hobby, and Chicago Midway.
- The 1980 expansion was soon joined by another expansion in the mid 80s which brought the total number of passenger gates to 6, more airline ticketing counters, more passenger ammenities and additions to the baggage handling systems.
- When Delta merged with western, they inhereted the Salt Lake City hub and SkyWest agreement, and soon after Delta began season 737-300 service to Jackson, in addition to year-round service on the fairchild metroliner and emb 120 brasilia.
- In the mid 80s, Delta began summer and winter seasonal service to Atlanta on the 757-200
- There is not much information regarding its Jackson ops, but durig the 80s and 90s Big Sky Airlines operated Beech 1900d service to Billings and Bozeman.
- The 90s saw Horizon DH6D and DH8D service begin to Boise, Idaho Falls and Seattle, United service begin to Denver, Chicago and Washington Dulles on the 757, A320, and B737-300. Soon after United, American began 757 service to Dallas, Chicago, and New York JFK.
- The 90s also had another airline ramp expansion to a total of 9 gates, the completion of the airports first rental car facilities southeast of the airport operations building, and the first FBO building with 2 new hangars be built and completed adjacent to runway 36.
2000s
- At some point in the very early 2000s, runway 18/36 was renamed as 19/1.
- Around the same time as the runway renaming, the airports’ first and current ATC tower was constructed. Prior to this, the airport was controlled by Salt Lake Center.
- In 2002, Continental Airlines came to Jackson with seasonal service to Newark, Cleveland, and Houston on the 737-500, 737-700 and B757-200.
- Between 2001 and 2005, the airport started a contract agreement with TSA to provide screening checkpoint, built an extension for gates 1, 2, and 3 in anticipation of NWA beginning service, built a new returant at the north end of the terminal, and built a new helebase for the Teton interagency. The restraurant expansion also gave more space for airline offices and baggage handling which had started to become outdated since its last upgrade in 1980.
- Indeed NWA came! Service began the summer of 2005 on the A319 and B757 to Minneapolis, with Detroit and Memphis joining in 2006!
- Around the time NWA came to Jackson, Delta began seasonal service to Cinncinati until around 2013 when CVG closed as a hub.
- In July 2009, the airports biggest expansion and remodel began. By the time contruction ended in December of 2010, the airport had 52,000 sqft of new space in addition to 48,000 of remodels. It brought more restaurant space, new airline offices, a brand new ticketing hall that was nearly 3x the sqft of the old hall, and a never before seen baggage handling system that was more than 20,000 sqft. It also brought a few minor updates to baggage claim and the TSA checkpoint.
2010s
- United began seasonal CRJ7 and later E175 service to Los Angeles for the 2010 summer season.
- After merging with Continental in 2010, United began seasonal service (also the summer of 2011) on the 737-500 and -700 to Houston, Newark and for a brief time until the hub closed… Cleveland.
- In the summer of 2011 after finalizing everything, having aquired a new fleet, routes and more, Delta began service to Jackson from Minneapolis, and Memphis on the A319. The Memphis route was discontinued when Delta closed it’s NWA aquired hub. The winter of 2011, Delta began seasonal service to New York JFK on the 757 and Los Angeles on the CRJ7/E175.
- In 2013, phase #2 started. By the time contrustruction ended in 2015, Jackson had a brand new baggage claim facility which brough the number of carosels from 2 to 4. It also brought more space for administrative offices and operations. This phase brought the total sqft of construction to 71,440.
- Around the summer of 2014, American began service to Phoenix on the CRJ7. The following winter LAX service was added, also on the CRJ7.
- The winter of 2015-2016 brought United flights from Washington Dulles on the 757, and Atlanta restarted with Delta’s 757 instead of the 737-700.
- Between 2015 and 2020, Frontier came and went a few seasons with A320 service to Denver. United began seasonal service to San Fransisco on the E175. Delta began service to Seattle on the E175, and American began service to New York LGA alongside the JFK service that had existed since the 90s.
2020s
- In march of 2020 due to the Covid Pandemic, United ceased Dulles flights.
- During much of the spring and summer of 2020, the airport completed an overhual of all parking lots. This included the addition of a new short term lot and overflow/employee lot both next to the airport operations building.
- In December 2020, American began seasonal A319 service to Charlotte.
- 2021 brought back Frontier for the summer season in addition to Boston flights on American, Detroit flights on Delta’ 757s, Allegiant flights (for exactly a month) to Las Vegas, Reno, Los Angeles and Phoenix, and seasonal service to Minneapolis on Sun Country.
- Between the summer of 2021 and summer of 2023 the airport saw many construction projects! These included more passenger amenities added to baggage claim, a new screen checkpoint, full runway rebuild in the spring of 2022 (took a total of only 90 days), and a new restaurant with the addition of gates 9 and 10.
- For the winter of 2022-2023, American offered saturaday service to Miami on the A319. It ended after only a few months due to very very low load factors (25% and less each flight).
- The summer of 2023 saw more charlotte flights which replaced Miami, and Sun Country for the last time. SCX brough their bigger 737-800 twice a week (wed, sat) which required a fuel stop in Bozeman on the return leg due to operational restrictions out of jackson.
- This fall (2024), Delta announced the return of service to Los Angeles on the E175 and Minneapolis on the A319.
- Next spring it is expected for United to bring back service to Dulles most likely on the 737-700.
Terminal Information
Jackson Hole airport currently has 1 passenger terminal with 11 airline gates. All gates except gate 3 can hold aircraft up to the B757-200 which is regularly used by Delta on flights to Atlanta. Gate 3 can’t hold anything larger than a CRJ7. The sole occupant of that gate is American for flights to Los Angeles and Phoenix. The terminal has a cafe in baggage claim next to carousel 3, and a full restaurant/bar in passenger holding. For more information, the best website is Travelers - Jackson Hole Airport

SID Diagrams
Jackson Hole does not have any published arrival procedures. All arrivals are controlled by Salt Lake Center until they pass the DUNOIR VOR which is located northeast of the airport in Moran Wyoming. Once DNW is passed, aircraft are passed to Jackson Tower and told to report fix WOMRU. At that fix, aircraft are cleared to land. When landing on runway 01, Salt Lake Center hands off aircraft at fix LIYET. Landing clearance is given once they pass ZUGEN.
Because of this, I will add the name of the published approach procedures and their respective transition fixes.
