Ultimate guide to Boise Airport

Boise Airport is the busiest airport in Idaho, leading far ahead the number 2 airport KIDA. The current airport has its origins back to 1936 when land started being leased from the city for a new airport to replace a gravel strip known as Boone Field, which now on the campus of Boise State University. Many sources give United Airlines credit for serving Boise the longest (97 years) due to its predecessor Varney Airlines having had roots in the area and having served the city until 1933 when it merged with NAT to form United.
In 1941 the airfield was renamed “Gowen Field” to honor 1st Lt. Paul R. Gowen who grew up in Caldwell, just north of the city. Gowen tragically died in a plane crash in 1938 shortly after departing Albrook Field in Panama.
Throughout the late 20th century, Boise saw a unique mix of aircraft and airlines which included the BAC 111 from Cascade Airways, and United with their DC6’s.
Currently, As of December 2023, Boise hosts a Focus city for Alaska Airlines, and servers 15 other airlines between 2 concourse’s and 2 cargo ramps.
