Two Days of Munich Specials and a Little Throwback | Munich, August 28/29, 2020

Welcome back to another weekly spotting topic ™!

Since traffic remains low and monotonous these days, I once again summed up my spotting activities, but today it’s only covering two consecutive spotting days from Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Let’s start with the Wednesday and a little hint of how the weather was giving us a hard time. A few minutes before the main special we were waiting for showed up for departure, clouds were (partially) covering the sun repeatedly, making for nice contrasts, but also quite a few messed up shots. In the case of this Lufthansa A350, we were on the lucky side.

A few minutes later, the reason I was spotting on Wednesday was ready to depart. After arriving one and a half weeks ago, one day after the Bahrain 747 visited us for a few hours (see my last topic for that one), their Boeing 767, the only -400 variant that wasn’t built for Delta or United, also left again after the medical checks of the King of Bahrain were completed.

To complete the spotting session on that sunny, yet stormy, day, I went to spot a few arrivals, starting with this Condor 757 still wearing a colorful mix of parts.

Another special arrived from Dubai - this time it was the blue variant of their EXPO livery on the 777. So I’m still missing the green variant in good light…

Before I left, I still waited for flyPegasus’s 737 wearing the Ada E. special livery.

After the spotting itself, I decided to travel to the Munich Olympic Park to take a few pics of a special piece of Munich Airport history. During the summer, several small festivals are spread around the entire city and the airport also contributes by showing off their old VW Bully follow-me car that used to be in service at the old Munich Riem Airport from 1966 at the Olympic Stadium of the 1972 games, so it’s fair to call this a throwback.

The next day, weather forecast wasn’t as amazing but still good enough to give spotting a try for two specials, starting with Etihad’s Manchester City livery.

Throughout the pandemic, Qatar’s 350 has been a regular guest and nothing special anymore, but I thought thanks to the nice cloud background this shot is still worth sharing.

While clouds can make for great backdrops, they can also be annoying if they show up between you and the sun. That was kinda the case for the special arrival of Turkmenistans Challenger 870, when a thin cloud layer took away the light needed for great pictures. Unfortunately, the weather was way worse when the plane departed two hours later.

Thanks for visiting this topic! I hope you liked it! See you for the next topic ;)

My Equipment:

Canon EOS 80D
Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II USM (99% of pics)
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS II USM (for wide angle pics)

Backup / Old Lenses

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (for the 1% of the cases where I needed a wide angle lens, replaced by the 24-105 now)
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS STM (for the majority of my very old pics, bascially completely replaced by the 100-400 now)

Great shots! Although are you trying to trademark spotting topics?

Kidding aside, that Etihad Man City picture is awesome! Keep up the good work!

That’s probably because of the good reputation of the doctors in and around Munich. It’s not entirely rare for people from the Middle East (and other nationalities as well) to travel to Munich for medical treatments

Munich has some really, really cool traffic! Never knew that Turkmenistan Airlines is flying to Munich, let alone with a Challenger (or is this a government plane?).

Some really cool pictures all around as always! Thanks for sharing ;)

Exactly, it wasn’t a scheduled flight :)
