TRIPREPORT: Spirit Airlines | Cartagena (CTG) -> Fort Lauderdale (FLL) | Go | Airbus A321-200

Good morning everybody from beautiful Cartagena, Colombia :colombia: while I didn’t have the most amount of time to truly enjoy it, I did enjoy the city overall in terms of what I was able to see in 1 half and 1 full day. Just like Medellín, I felt safe almost everywhere we went. No advisories to be aware of our surroundings, lots of tourists as well on the 2 nights we went out there were A LOT of foreigners and we met this very friendly German :germany: couple on a party bus and they told us they’ve been enjoying their time to. So, if you ever get the chance to come to Colombia :colombia: Cartagena should be on your plans!

Our apartment also isn’t far from Rafael Núñez International Airport the main although cramped airport serving the city. The airport has 1 terminal but like most airports in the country, split into 2 sections domestic and international we already went through the domestic area on Fridays flight from Cartagena to Cali but since today we’re flying Spirit Airlines to Fort Lauderdale :desert_island::motor_boat: we’ll be going through the international side. The check in hall is the shared with all airlines at this airport like Spirit, American, Copa, Avianca, LATAM, JetSmart and even Delta which surprised me a bit. While we already checked in online, we still had to make the long line thanks to our checked bag that is something I like about flying out of the US :united_states: instead of into it but in their defense, American Airlines their main US competitor didn’t seem to have a special bag drop area either.
After a not terribly long process came not only security but outbound immigration another reason the other being organization as to why international and domestic flights are often split in Colombia :colombia: thankfully immigration wasn’t too long but the security check did take some time but not long at all apart from 2 Canadians trying to cut the line sorry if your from Canada :canada: most of your people are friendly. After the typical duty free stores we made into the departure hall which isn’t the best looking, easily the worst one out of the major Colombian airports I’ve been to but not entirely bad. It’s still got plenty of seating but very little places to plug in your devices which is definitely a big downer. It’s also lacking basic restaurants with the only things available to eat are things from pharmacies and snacks from the duty free stores. This is like the only time I’d prefer to be in the domestic terminal rather than the international one but with my rant out of the way, I sat down and simply awaited our boarding.

FLIGHT INFO:

Origin: Cartagena Rafael Nunez Airport (SKCG) :colombia:
Destination: Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Intl (KFLL) :united_states:
Flight Time: 2:24
Airbus A321-200 (Spirit Airlines)
Server: None (Real Life)

Taking us to Fort Lauderdale :desert_island::motor_boat: will be N662NK a 9 year old Airbus A321-200 delivered to Spirit in December 2015 in time for Christmas :christmas_tree: this is also the same exact NK A321 we have in Infinite Flight so another reason to recreate this flight once we get back home. For some reason, they made me board from the REAR of the aircraft not complaining as it got to walk around the aircraft.

Thankfully, Spirit didn’t cram as much seats in their A321ceos compared to their neos but it’s not a whole lot better with 228 in total. They have a similar configuration with the first 2 rows being big front seats and rows 4-6 having blocked middle seats. I’m seated in 23F which isn’t the most comfortable but not tight at all but I still think the JetSmart seat was slightly more comfortable. Since this aircraft is one of their ceos, we have the infamous baby trays with a side of stains of what looks to be crayons? Hopefully it is that and not something else however. Boarding wasn’t exactly quick, especially with a problem of two passengers having the same assigned seat but once we got moving, we backtracked runway 01 for take off!

Till another day Cartagena! Where I was staying at the pool, you got a decent view of the departing aircraft from CTG and there I can see where I was spending my time here.

We would departure straight out of Cartagena headings towards Fort Lauderdale :desert_island::motor_boat: and reached our cruising altitude of 36,000ft pretty quickly over the Caribbean Sea.

The crew soon got up started the inflight service which I once again got nothing from but they did seem friendly but I didn’t see a whole ton of interactions with others so 3 stars :star::star::star:

IFE is also a similar situation, WiFi was an extra cost that I didn’t bother purchasing and the lack of plugs on the plane really sucked especially since the situation at CTG airport isn’t any better so I just looked out the window to preserve battery life.

Down there is Jamaica :jamaica: or what should be at least thank you fog.

Thankfully, the weather cleared up as we approached Cuba :cuba: but only a little bit.

Around this time, my seat mate bought a cup of noodles for her daughter and the smell was BOTHERING me in a good way however.

The clear water of the Bahamas :bahamas: gives us the signal that we’d soon be begin our approach into Fort Lauderdale :desert_island::motor_boat: today we’d do a different but better approach in my opinion into FLL, we’d start normally before we turned right base rather than left over Hollywood before turning base over Miramar and coming to land on RWY 10R similar to the standard approach into MIAs RWY 9.

Here we are on final for FLLs RWY 10R and I got to say, I really preferred this approach over the standard one on the left side. Over there you can see the Hard Rock Guitar, one of the nicest buildings in the entire metro area.

TOUCHDOWN! Welcome to Fort Lauderdale :desert_island::motor_boat: and the end of another trip. This flight went pretty much the way I expected, seats were eh, crew were decent, IFE was non existent and so were plugs. The latter which still bugs me as the year is 2025 and it doesn’t cost Spirit that much extra to provide them, especially if Allegiant has them now. Other than that, Spirit isn’t a bad choice especially if it’s not any more than the competition.

Welcome to gate G2 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport with the last view of our aircraft where it’ll head to Nashville next and nextdoor is the much better A321neo soon heading to Columbus. We will now proceed to passport control :passport_control: which is never the best experience and today was no exception. The lines for passport control itself was fine the only problem is that our bags haven’t come out yet. At FLL, you claim your bags FIRST for some odd reasons and is the main reason why I don’t like arriving here internationally with checked bags. MIA doesn’t have this procedure and you just do it normally. We spent 15 minutes waiting for our bags which wasn’t bad but still some time but luckily passport control itself only took 7 minutes as it was shockingly empty for a Friday during Spring Break. We then said our goodbyes and made our way back home to rest.

That will be it regarding this flight from Cartagena, Colombia :colombia: to Fort Lauderdale :desert_island::motor_boat: on Spirit Airlines’s Airbus A321-200 stay tuned for the YouTube version of all 4 trip reports from this trip coming soon and as always between now and the next time, see you in the sky!:waving_hand:

Thank you!

Great trip report! It really irks me that some ULCCs (looking at you, Spirit and Frontier) don’t have power outlets. On a 90 minute flight, it’s probably fine. But for some of the fairly lengthy routes these airlines do, not having power could become a problem. That’s one of the nice things about Sun Country - they have power ports. Really handy on those 5+ hours to Latin American/Caribbean destinations, especially since you stream entertainment directly to your personal device.

Thank you again @Mort

I 100% agree they are needed in 2025 especially with Spirit’s big expansions they have the aircraft and once the slots and permissions come, I can 100% see them starting Brazil service and being on a plane for 5 hours without any power wouldn’t be fun.

Thank you my friend! @CEEKAYDA_97
