TRIPREPORT: American Airlines | Miami (MIA) -> Lima (LIM) | Main Cabin Extra | Airbus A321

Hello everybody and good afternoon from sunny Miami ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Ž where Iโ€™m heading out to Miami International Airport right now to catch my flight down to Lima, Peru ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ช we will be flying American Airlines on their Airbus A321-200 in main cabin extra which is AAs economy plus offering to see how it is to fly them internationally for 5 hours on a narrowbody. MIA is one of Americans busiest hubs and coincidentally is turning 35 years old the day I am taking this flight, this airport is extremely important to their route network thanks to defunct airlines Easter and Pan Am they were able to acquire a lot of their Latin American routes and still in 2024, AA is still the prominent US carrier on this market and earned the city of Miami ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Ž a new nickname, โ€œgateway to the Americasโ€ AA uses all of the north terminal, concourse D and parts of the central terminal concourse E and neither terminal werenโ€™t too busy at this time of day. Despite checking online I still had to check my bag and decided to print out some paper boarding passes while I was at it. Security didnโ€™t take long at all thanks to my TSA pre check and no major rush right now since itโ€™s only like 12:30pm. No need for a Cafe Versailles stop since this is an afternoon flight and I didnโ€™t have to wake up too early at all. Instead I visited the Admirals Club thanks to my status with American. I found it pretty nice and I made sure to get some food here since Iโ€™m pretty positive we wonโ€™t be getting anything on the flight. After relaxing and getting some last minute school work done, I decided to head off to gate D49 hosting our departure to Lima this afternoon!

Our ride down to Peru ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ช will be N436AN an August 2021 built Airbus A321 delivered directly to American. Now this isnโ€™t the first time Iโ€™ve gone 5 hours on an A321 as I previously flew on AAs flagship first transcon between New Yorks JFK ๐Ÿ—ฝ๐ŸŽ and Los Angeles ๐ŸŒด๐Ÿ“ธ but this will be the first time Iโ€™ll be doing it in economy, how will it go? Letโ€™s get onboard and find out!

This A321 has AAs new somewhat controversial narrowbody hard product featuring 190 total seats with 20 in first class and the remaining 170 in economy with 35 of them being extra legroom, main cabin extra seats. AA decided to go with the Collins Meridian Slimlines for the economy cabin which are similar to the seats found on Southwests Boeing 737-800s and MAX8s. My seat will be 9A which is in the 2nd row of the economy cabin and despite being a main cabin extra seat, I was still able to pre select it free of charge thanks to my status. I found it spacious and overall great for a 5 hour flight so the hard product isnโ€™t bad but how about the soft product? Lets find out soon as we pushback and make our way to MIAs runway 8R for take off!

Bye bye Miami! ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Iโ€™ve seen it hundreds of times by now but this view over the city will never fail to impress me! ๐Ÿ˜

After an uneventful climb over the Atlantic we reached our cruising altitude of 33,000ft passing right by Cuba ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡บ meanwhile the service had begun which was basically the traditional American Airlines service, biscoff cookies or pretzels along with a drink which I chose to have some pretzels with Coke ๐Ÿฅจ๐Ÿฅค they tasted great like always but I feel like for a 5 hour flight, a small sandwich would be bettee instead of just light snacks but I ate before the flight so it didnโ€™t bother me to much. The crew were pretty friendly all based in Miami ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Ž with most of them of Peruvian decent happy to able to work the flight back to their home country so no complaints from me today, 5 stars โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ as IFE goes, AA decided to take out the seat back screens on their newer narrow bodies instead going for people using their devices to stream content for free. This aircraft is equipped with ViaSat KA-band satellite wifi for a fee of course and like always, I opted out and instead just watched some Young Sheldon to pass the time.

Our flight took us right over Panama ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ฆ before flying directly off the coast of Colombia ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ด before reaching the coast of Ecuador ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡จ flying past Quito and Guayaquil before flying along the coast of Peru ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ช towards Lima. And the sun began to set off the coast of Colombia and I decided to take a picture of it from the exits peephole while coming back from the lavatory.

Back in my seat, as we reached the Peruvian coastline we caught a great view of the Andes? ๐Ÿ”๏ธ well we did see them but not by much since it was really dark out. Right before descent the crew came around with another round of drinks which I just went with some water. Our approach into LIM tonight is pretty straightforward literally, we just continue our heading as we make a straight in approach into RWY 15.

Nice view of the pacific coastline! ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒŠ now letโ€™s enjoy our landing into LIMs RWY 15!

TOUCHDOWN! Welcome to Lima, Peru ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ช everybody. Overall, I really thought this flight was great the seats were good, leg space was good up in MCE, crew were nice and the IFE worked well. My only complaint is the service i do think that 2 beverage runs are good but I feel like 1 snack isnโ€™t enough Iโ€™m not saying we need full meals but at least some medium sized sandwiches I think theyโ€™d be enough to get the job done but other than that, I feel like American Airlines delivered today! ๐Ÿ‘

Here we are, welcome to Limaโ€™s Jorge Chavez International Airport where we proceed straight to immigration which didnโ€™t take too long but was still somewhat busy thanks to a lot of arrivals. Our bags did take some time to come out but once again not a lot and I was soon outside heading out to my rental car to grab some dinner before making my way to the hotel and simply getting some rest. Thatโ€™s all regarding this flight on American Airlines from Miami ๐Ÿ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜Ž to Lima, Peru ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ช on their Airbus A321 stay tuned for next Sunday as we make the return back to the 305 and as always between now and the next time, see you in the sky! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ‘‹
