TRIPREPORT: Air Asia | Bangkok (BKK) -> Phuket (HKT) | Economy | Airbus A320-200

Good afternoon from Bangkok, Thailand :thailand: I’m currently making my way across this beautiful city back to Suvarnabhumi airport not to begin my flights home however, oh no no. Today I will be making my way down south to Phuket, a city correctly placed on the Thai island of Phuket. From what I’ve seen online, it looks like a BEAUTIFUL :star_struck: place to visit and from my very satisfying experience for the few days I’ve had in Bangkok, my expectations for this place are pretty high. We will be flying on Air Asia’s Airbus A320-200 in economy class I’m glad your joking me but without further to do, let’s get to the airport!

I arrived at the airport with plenty of time which is a good thing considering the check in line for Air Asia was decently long. I had to spend 20 minutes in that line waiting to drop off my 2 checked bags and the security line wasn’t a whole lot better taking 15 minutes. The terminal was pretty crowded which honestly didn’t surprise as most major airports in this region of the world are pretty busy 24/7. Since we’re flying a low cost carrier, there was pretty much nothing to do at all except walk around the terminal which I personally didn’t mind because it was looked stunning and there was still a good amount of restaurants and shops in the departures hall. After a stroll around the terminal, I decided to sit down in the gate area to await our aircraft’s arrival.

My ride down south across the Gulf of Thailand will be HS-ABQ, an almost 15 year old Airbus A320-200 delivered to Air Asia in August 2010. There really isn’t anything noteworthy about this aircraft except it spent almost a year in storage in Bangkok’s other airport, Don Mueang. Boarding was commenced on time and was surprisingly handled well considering the crowds in the terminal, I gotta commend Air Asia on this! :+1:

Air Asia has 2 types of A320s, one seating 180 and the other seating 186 both in ALL economy configurations. The 180 seater operates with Air Asia Malaysia :malaysia: Cambodia :cambodia: Indonesia :indonesia: Philippines :philippines: and Thailand :thailand: while the other one solely operates in Malaysia :malaysia: this makes it a no brainer to say I’m on the type that seats 180 passengers, more specifically I’m in 19A. The seat is not that comfortable but that’s to be expected on a low cost carrier. There really isn’t much I can say on this seat, it’s basic but will do the job for this short hour hop. Just like the gate agents, the crew wrapped up boarding pretty quickly and it was soon time to pushback, and taxi all the way across the airport to runway 20R for take off!

Bye, bye Bangkok!

We departed straight out crossing over the Bay of Bangkok with the city of Chon Buri, Thailand :thailand: off in the distance before turning westward to continue our journey to Phuket.

After a pretty uneventful climb out of BKK, we reached our cruising altitude of 36,000ft. Considering the flight was pretty short, the crew didn’t bother with their service but this is a low cost airline after all so nothing was going to complimentary anyways. I’m still going to give them 3 stars :star::star::star: for their efficient boarding process! Wi-Fi is NOT available which I didn’t expect to see anyways.

Soon enough, those few 10 minutes or so in cruise were over and it was to begin the descent, we would fly directly towards Phuket before turning base off the coast of the island over the Phang Nga Bay and coming to land on HKTs RWY 27.

During that base turn, somebody thought I’d be a good idea to their DRONE up here, they got a pretty cool snap out of it! :camera_with_flash:

The beautiful waters of the Thalay Phuket made our final approach into HKTs RWY 27 one of the most STUNNING  I’ve ever experienced not Maldives :maldives: level but still good!

TOUCHDOWN! Welcome to Phuket, Thailand! :thailand: now Air Asia, it’s pretty much what you’d come to expect on a low cost carrier really around the world, cheap fares and no frills. While Asian carriers like the gulf ones, JAL, ANA, Singapore offer over the top products definitely over the big 3 US carriers. The ULCCs in this area are really identical to what Spirit, Frontier and Allegiant offer hard product wise. But that truly doesn’t matter, they got me from Bangkok to Phuket for pretty cheap albeit the 2 checked bags and seat selection so I’ll definitely fly them again!

Welcome to Phuket International Airport which also has a pretty nice terminal, I’m really impressed! The walk to baggage claim :baggage_claim:wasn’t that long and the my bags also came out quickly. I’m pretty satisfied with Air Asias overall efficiency they may have that advantage over the big 3 ULCCs in the states. I got into my rental car and made my way to my villa to drop off my bags and relax before heading into the city for a night out.

That will be it regarding my brief flight on Air Asia’s Airbus A320-200 in economy class from Bangkok to Phuket, Thailand :thailand: stay tuned for my next flight on Air Asia back to BKK and as always between now and the next time, see you in the sky!:waving_hand:

Oh one more thing, @United403 summon
