TRIP REPORT: Hartford (BDL) to Chicago (MDW) | SWA 737 MAX 8

Hello guys! It’s my first trip report here so feedback is accepted!!

Hello! On August 31, 2025, I Flew back from Bradley International in Hartford to Midway International in Chicago on WN3799. This flight was operated by a 737 MAX 8. Our flight was scheduled to depart at 5:45 PM ET, and arrive at 7:05 PM CT.
We arrived at BDL at 4 PM ET, checked our 3 bags and headed towards TSA. With it being near Labor Day, the Terminal was almost empty. So we head towards TSA Pre, with a very short line, where we scan our boarding passes and put our stuff into trays to send through the X-ray machines. I take everything out of my pockets, which is an extra SWA carry-on tag and some tissues. Upon clearing TSA, we check our flight status. It turns out our plane, N8866H, was delayed getting out of MDW and was expected to depart at 6:06. By the time we get to the terminal, we’ve only spent 20 minutes. So, we take a leisurely walk through the terminal and see a Prime Air 767, some United and American, Breeze (@Poxy summon), and even BermudAir. We sit down at a restaurant to get some lunch. I got a chicken Caesar salad. As we get to our gate, I go up and down the terminal for some plane spotting. I got some videos of a Spirit, ATI 767, and an Aer Lingus plane landing. Our plane is finally at the gate so we start to line up.

Our plane, N8866H, a 737 MAX 8, had just come in from MDW. We line up in a sweet A24 position. Boarding was a nice and swift process, and we landed ourself seat 6A-C and 5A-C.

Coincidentally, 6 and 5 are improved legroom seats which was a pleasant surprise. Plenty of space to stretch my legs, and a wonderful window view for our sunset departure at BDL.

The MAX 8 begins its Southwest-style taxi to runway 33. We line up for takeoff with a Spirit A320 behind us while a Delta Plane begins its pushback. We hold short of the runway for a few seconds, then out on the runway to rocket out of BDL.

The engines spool up, and we’re gone! We have a hasty climb over 10,000 as we travel over the lush hills and trees of Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York. The view is outstanding, especially with the Sunset lighting. So many trees and hills in this area.

At our low cruise of 24,000 feet for a 1:45 hour flight. I watched Jumanji, stared out the window, and just kicked back and relaxed with my extra legroom.

Shortly after, the in flight service starts. I got a Sprite and some Pretzels, which were fire. I also took advantage of the USB-A and -C chargers in the seat.

Beginning our short descent from 24000 feet over Indiana. We went from lots of hills to farmland, and soon to suburban areas. One was surrounded by a good course :face_with_spiral_eyes:

And… a buttery smooth sunset touchdown! Per Midway standards, we stopped quickly and get off the runway near gate B5. We taxied over to our gate, which I was really exited for because…

It was gate A4A which is a really cool part of concourse A. It’s kinda like a mini satellite. Also, I’ve waited years to return to concourse A. Had not been there in ages.

Our plane parked next to a 737-800 at A4B. This, of course means that it is time to leave the airport. While quite a sad thing, it means I get to return to my house. The shuttle bus back to the garage was quite cramped, but not anything weird.

Review:

Climb, Cruise, and landing: 9/10
In flight entertainment/services: 8/10
Boarding/Deplaning: 8/10
Plane cleanliness/features: 9/10
Airport experience: 10/10

Overall: ~9/10

Fantastic trip report! The MAXs are so great.

I always forget they serve Hartford - it’s a pretty random destination from Bermuda.

Nice photos, the weather also looks pretty chill.

Welcome to the club, I’m 5’6” after the growth spurt lol, although they say it’s when the “second” one starts so I hope I don’t turn out a gnome he he.

Yeah one of the first times is a while where it wasn’t cloudy, also very nice temperature wise.

I hope I’m not short for long either, I also don’t wanna be a gnome

I don’t think there’s a specific height requirement to be a pilot. It’d probably be easier to be on the shorter side too in a lot of flight decks.

That’s what he’s worried about lol. 5’8” is pretty tall before any growth spurts
