Trip Report: From Sun to Ice

Hello Infinite Flight! Join me as I end my vacation in the south of France with a ride on Icelandair’s 757-200, affectionally named “Eldborg.” My fellow avgeek friend booked Saga Premium, while I was stuck in Economy, but you’ll get a little taste of both on today’s flight from Nice to Keflavik/Reykjavik.

Server: Solo
Flight Time: 3 hours, 38 minutes
Route: Nice, France (LFMN) to Keflavik, Iceland (BIKF)
Aircraft and Livery: Icelandair 757-200 “Eldborg”

We got to Nice Côte d’Azur Airport‘s Terminal 2 at around 11:30 AM, for out 2:00 flight back to Iceland. Our time in the South of France was amazing, and we were sad for it to come to an end. After check in and security, we picked up lunch and ate it at our gate while we waited for our flight to board.

The aircraft being loaded up for its flight back to Keflavik.

We boarded and took out seats, me in Economy and by friend up in Saga Premium. The plane had a relatively new cabin, with large IFE screens and high speed Wi-Fi for a small fee. The cabin crew handed out water bottles before we pushed back and taxied to the runway.

After takeoff from runway 04L, we headed skimmed the coast of France on our initial climb, before banking north into Italy, heading for the Alps.

Banking once more, after climbing through 15,000 feet. A bit of turbulence over the mountains, but nothing too bad.

The tail cam picked up this nice shot of us crossing the English Channel at 36,000 feet. While this leg took merely minutes, the first person who crossed the Channel, Louis Blériot, took over an hour.

Iceland! After a flight over England and Ireland, then a short hop over the North Atlantic, we got our first glimpse of the Icelandic coast, east of Keflavik.

Approaching the airport, at around 11,000 feet as viewed from the Saga Premium cabin. The approach was smooth as glass, which was unusual for Iceland at this time of year.

After making a sharp turn left, the pilots dropped the landing gear and made our short final into runway 01.

Welcome to Keflavik! We buttered the landing into Iceland, before taxiing down the rest of the runway and over to our gate.
