Could someone tell me what transitions are, when pilots request them, and how ATC uses them?
A transition is when you fly over an airport basically, I’ll let someone else clarify:)

When you’re crossing tower airspace at or below 5k feet AGL.
You do not need to request it above this altitude. You should never randomly switch off of approach to tower to request it.
Those are the two most common mistakes I encounter with it.
That document is helpful, but if you want a quick answer here, a transition is requested when you will be flying in an active airspace.
This is so ATC tells you which is the minimum altitude to go through to avoid colliding with other aircraft flying patterns or into an approach.
