What’s the age on that airframe?
The flap track fairing covers are more aesthetic and for aerodynamic reasons than anything safety/functional. It must have been damaged at some point and they took the cover off. It’s not a big deal, so they’ll replace it whenever it’s at a maintenance stop next.
It’s N833DN, who’s 11 years old! The flap track fairing was definitely removed that long ago, since all the JetPhotos pictures have the fairing intact.

Wonder how much extra fuel is burned because of the very slightly reduced aerodynamics…
According to the Google AI Overview, it’s a 1% to 3.14% increase in fuel consumption. The 737-900ER uses about 7,400lbs of fuel per flight hour. For the two-hour flight from SLC-MSP, that’s roughly 14,800lbs. 2% of that is 296lbs or 44 gallons of jet fuel. Jet fuel is sitting at $3.47/gallon today. So, according to my very rough math, it cost Delta $152 extra to fly SLC-MSP with that missing fairing.
