Hi, Ive been flying for a while but new to the forum. I was flying into Calgary and called inbound. I was told by the ATC to check the tutorial on ATC. Can someone please let me know what I did wrong here? Just trying to get better. Thanks.
@KC3DLL will be able to elucidate his reasoning.
Too high when asking for inbound
Too far actually. 36nm is a bit far to contact tower. Should wait until you are a bit closer/within the airspace rings.
Hey I’m out and about rn, when I get home in a few hours I’ll send you a pm
Too high to call in? Absolutely not. The airport he was landing at is at elevation 3,500 feet. Calling in at 11,000 feet means he was only:
11,000-3,500 = 7,500 feet above the airport at 36nm out. Well below suggested call in altitude.
Calling in 36 nm out is perfectly okay to do and actually way better than waiting until you are near the rings which is only 12 nm away (Class Bravo airport - outer ring)
Suggested call in distance is around 20-25nm (or more) at or around 10,000 feet AAL (above aerodrome level/above airport elevation). Calling in earlier is fine.
At CYYC 10,000 AAL would be 10,000 + 3,500 = 13,500 feet above sea level
Thank you.

Lots of good info.
Controller took care of this via PM.
