Touchscreen issues (Only occur on infinite flight)

Every interaction seems to become frozen. For example shortly after that clip I attempted to disconnect my ground services but couldn’t as it was unresponsive.

Zooms do seem to be what becomes frozen the most tho/trigger it almost. Same goes for when using free cam and zooming, not just on the map.

I have had something similar happen twice on iPad Pro 12.9 3rd Gen (pre M), where exclusively in hub airports, during my ATC controlling and after some time, some touches are registering in wrong places to where I intended to touch. For example, in the drag vector tool, line would be appearing and disappearing few times per second and varying in direction by 30-50 degree. As I am clicking through the menu on the right side, it would get closed as if I tapped the main map. Occasionally the touch is offset by few centimetres and also similar issues to what was said above. I will get the screen recording of this as Cam suggested and share once it happens again.

Yep, I also experience the issue at busy hubs and never at quiet airports. Also more prevalent with larger/more complex aircraft like the A380 + in daytime with shadows.

I seem to experience the issue in all sorts of places. For example in the video above I was at Gatwick (which tbf can reduce my frame rate a bit even when its empty) but I’ve also had the problem a couple times at cruise.

I managed to fly a full flight today with the issue popping up much less. It definitely is affected by the charger as it occurred much more when on charge, although it still happened without.

Still wondering why it only happens on infinite flight though

I have been investigating this issue for several weeks because I experienced exactly the same Ghost Touch problem on my iPad Air 5 (M1), especially while charging during Infinite Flight.

At first I suspected a defective cable or charger. I replaced a cheap USB-C cable with a high-quality Anker cable and also replaced my multi-port Baseus charger with a single-port Anker Nano II 65W charger. The problem became significantly less frequent, but it did not disappear completely.

I then purchased a USB-C power analyzer (YOJOCK KWS-X1) and measured voltage, current, charging protocols and ripple (VPP) under different charging conditions.

Both chargers produced stable voltages and reasonably low ripple values. Under light load the ripple was typically around 40-70 mV, while under heavy load (Infinite Flight) it increased temporarily to around 100-200 mV, with occasional higher peaks during rapid load changes. Nothing looked obviously defective.

The interesting part came from observing when Ghost Touch actually appeared.

After many tests I discovered that the problem almost completely disappears if I avoid touching the metal shell of the USB-C connector while the iPad is charging.

Short accidental contact does not usually trigger anything. However, if my finger rests on the metal connector for several seconds, or repeatedly touches it while using the iPad, Ghost Touch starts appearing. As soon as I stop touching the connector, the display usually returns to normal within seconds without restarting the iPad.

Even charging all the way to 100% is no longer a problem as long as I never touch the connector housing.

This made me wonder whether the issue is related to capacitive coupling rather than charging power itself.

Modern touchscreens are extremely sensitive capacitive sensors. If the USB connector has an anodized metal shell (which is electrically insulated by a very thin oxide layer), my finger and the connector may effectively form a tiny capacitor. Combined with the charging electronics, this could slightly change the electrical reference potential seen by the touchscreen controller.

I also considered static electricity. Sitting on an insulated fabric sofa can slowly charge the human body. Normally this is harmless, but while the iPad is connected to a charger, repeatedly touching the connector may allow small capacitive potential changes to couple into the system.

This is only a hypothesis, but it matches every observation much better than a hardware defect in the display.

Interestingly, I have not experienced Ghost Touch anymore simply by holding the iPad differently: I now insert and remove the cable by holding the fabric-covered part of the cable instead of the connector, and I avoid resting my finger on the connector during charging.

Since many reports seem to come from Apple devices with capacitive touchscreens, it may be worth investigating whether certain charging conditions, grounding, or capacitive coupling between the user, charger and USB-C connector can influence the touch controller.

I hope these observations help narrow down the cause. Even if my hypothesis turns out to be wrong, the behaviour is highly repeatable on my device and may provide useful clues for further investigation.

This is interesting as I’ve also noticed it seems to stop once removing the charger + Magic Keyboard.

With that said, I don’t experience the issue at all at quiet airports (i.e., less performance-intensive environments). I really only experience the issue on approach to busy airports, even if the device is removed from its charger. This makes me think it’s a performance issue.

As I mentioned above, the ripple increased temporarily under heavy load, which was the case on busy airports and using the cheaper charger, I even had above 300 mV, which is still in a reasonable range, but It gives me a clue that some faulty chargers could produce much higher ripple voltages.

Also different combinations of cables and chargers had significantly different outputs under load.

I’ll post once it’s sent, but if you can record a screen recording with “Show Touches” and send a log if the issue happens, that would be great :slight_smile:

Sounds good - thanks for your help. I’ll try another video tonight as the featured hub is busier, but the video further up in this thread is the issue I’m experiencing… but imagine on approach, so your rudder, throttle, AP controls etc get stuck and don’t work.

In my case I can definitely tell, it’s a charger, cable, capacitative coupling issue, as it never happens, when I don’t charge. And in my case it also happens and affects other apps, where I experience ghost touch issues and lack of response from screen controller.

And I will not trigger it on purpose while inflight :sweat_smile: I know how to avoid it

reading this seems very interesting. since when using infinite flight, the voltage level increases while charging, could it be related to heat? i’m not much of an expert, but since it seems to occur mainly while charging, and it still occurs even not on charge. though since it only happens on infinite flight, i would doubt it

It seems now that it’s only occurring while the iPad is charging for me
