I have been doing some IF airport observing and I noticed that some planes land, while others do touch and goes. What is the official procedure when doing touch and goes? (Ex. Flaps, Spoilers, ATC, etc.)
I know this might seem like a basic, stupid question, but I have seen it done many different ways and I want to try and get it right. Thanks!
Flaps and landing procedure is normal, only things that are different is you don’t arm the spoilers, and contact ATC that you’re doing a touch and go @Mark_Denton did a video about this on the IF channel, you can learn more there
Also make sure to pay attention to ATC clearing pattern work/touch and go’s! From a “noob ATC perspective”, when its busy and I’m trying to get some training in I always get frustrated when its busy and I ask for no pattern work and I see people doing it anyways.
Pattern work is when you take off from the airport and you remain the airports landing pattern. The ATC will clear you for which direction they want you to take off towards (right downwind means the airport will be to your right, etc…)
There’s some good tutorials as mentioned if you follow things links above. Helped me greatly understand directions (ive only been on here a few weeks). Just pay attention to where the ATC wants you in pattern, and then always remember that in the TS1 (training server) there’s a lot of people that just do what they want. But if you’re wanting to “do it right”, check out the videos!
When you request take off clearance, remaining in the pattern, that mean you want do touch and goes. ATC will give you clearance for take off with traffic direction:
“Xx, runaway 31R, cleared for take off, make right traffic”
Thet mean you must turn right after teke off on right crosswind, then right downwind, right base and on final runway 31R.
Once when in the air, ATC should sequence you:
“Xx, nbr 3, traffic to follow is on right downwind”
That mean two airplanes are in front of you and you need to follow that one wich is on right downwind.
ATC will send clearance for option
Xx, nbr 3, runaway 31R, cleared for option"
That mean you have clearenc for lending and touch & go for runway 31R, and after t&g again follow right traffic.
I find spoilers useful on those occasions where it’s windy. They help stick the aircraft on the runway. You just have to remember to retract them at the same time you set flaps for takeoff.
@Will_Haxton… MaxSez: Suggest you get a Free Copy of “The Pilots Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge” it’s the aviators Bible. It’s available from faa.gov (use the search function)
I use spoilers when doing patterns if crosswinds or strong headwinds are present, it helps keeping the aircraft on the ground. I turn them off along with flaps retraction procedure.
@Bare… MaxSez: “Remaining in the Pattern”. Does not mean you wanna do T&G only. One remains in the pattern for any number of reasons, a test flight for example. In IF unfortunately it’s assumed! Tower operators are not mind readers. One states intentions. If I didle about in the vicinity of my launch site,
I routinely state “Going around” if my intent is T&G I make the appropriate T&G inbound initially as I join the pattern gaggle. The option is the next step.
