Tips for a stable and aligned landing with the runway

Hello guys,
I’ve benefited a lot from your expertise, thank you so much. I’m truly happy to be a member of this creative community.

I’ll share a small story — today I was on my flight in Experts’ Server from Abu Dhabi to Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport.
During the final stages of landing, there were very strong crosswinds.
My question is: Why wasn’t the runway changed from 32R/32L to 14R/14L?
Runway 14 isn’t perfect either, but it seemed like a better option than 32 under the conditions.

And my second question is about trimming during landing. Is it necessary to adjust the trim?
Because when I do, I often get a stall warning.
I actually feel more comfortable landing without trimming.
Can you advise me on how to trim properly?
I’m trying to make my landings more professional, and I’ve already improved a lot through training and keeping my hands steady after disconnecting the autopilot.

I’d really appreciate your guidance, friends.

Hey there!

Depending on where the crosswind is from and its strength, they can use either end. They probably kept with the 32s for landing as they were already using them and switching runways with a busy airspace is quite a pain to do.

Also the layout of Madrid means that the 14s aren’t used for landing. They would use the 14s for departures, and the 18s for landings.

Adjust the trim very slowly - the airplane won’t respond so “violently”. As for what the proper amount of trim, you want to ideally have no coloured bar in the trim box. If the coloured line is going down from the middle, you need more positive trim and vice versa.

If you have any other questions - please don’t be afraid to ask. My inbox is also always open for any questions

Should I adjust the trim during the final stages of landing? And do all professional pilots in Infinite Flight land manually, or do they rely on the autopilot until they’re off the runway? This question has been bothering me, and I want an accurate answer🙂

I try to be at landing configuration (incl. trim) by 1000ft above the runway at the latest.

I wouldn’t call us professional  - I personally disengage autopilot at around 1000ft above the airport altitude and fly the landing manually - however a lot of pilots use APPR Autoland all the way down.

Alright, I’ll try to be as precise as possible with my question:
Do pilots let the autopilot handle the entire landing process, even including the rollout after touchdown — meaning, do they allow the autopilot to do everything up to the actual touchdown and continue until the landing is fully complete and the flaps are retracted, before they disconnect it?"

In real life the vast majority of landings are done manually.

Yes, I know that — what I meant was, in the simulator community, do most people usually disconnect the autopilot? Because I see them performing very beautiful landings even in conditions with strong crosswinds

It’s a bit mixed tbh - you’ll see some doing it manually, some obviously using APPR.

I always want to use it [the autopilot] until the very end, but whenever the aircraft touches down while I’m in APPR mode, it always bounces, and the landing isn’t as smooth as the others who use it. What’s the reason?"

The APPR in Infinite Flight is terrible at doing smooth landings.

Alright, so that means most Infinite Flight users disconnect it before touchdown to ensure a smooth landing."

If you’re looking to practice stable and aligned landings you’re on the right track! Most people ask how to land smoothly, and forget that a smooth landing starts with…a stable and aligned approach!

The best thing to do would be to practice, and solo mode is usually the best place because you can repeatedly get onto short final or the further final option.

When practicing get a feel for these once you have manual control of the plane:

  • How much rudder is needed
  • How much aileron deflection is needed
  • How much thrust is needed
  • How much pitch is needed

The cool thing about solo mode is that you can change the wind direction, so you can effectively train landings in all sorts of situations.

If you practice how to have a smooth and stable approach, then you can start focusing on the touchdown and have those “beautiful landings” that you see.

Thanks for the tips — I’ve started practicing the perfect landing pattern after disconnecting the autopilot,

Yes there’s a lot of previous polls. I see no reason why it would be any different today.

I’m new to this simulator, I just joined 3 months ago, that’s why I’m asking.

No worries! I’m pretty sure many people have wondered this before.
