Our RP excursions take us all over the US & Canada this week for Labor Day week and end-of-summer festivities.
Commercial - Top destinations for Labor Day weekend include Miami, NYC, Chicago, LA, Seattle (Bumbershoot festival), Orlando, & Washington DC. Focus departures from these cities. These cities are involved in 3 days on the IFATC schedule. However, if you are looking for some travel “with character,” try these:
S Florida to Philly
Ft Lauderdale (KFLL) - Lehigh Valley (KABE) | A320 Allegiant
What better way to celebrate the end of summer than with white-sand beaches, skimpy swimsuits, and a tan. But a tropical storm over the weekend put a damper on a lot of beach plans. Several well-tanned passengers board, having just disembarked from their week-long Caribbean cruise. Though, the last day at sea was a little rough. A family boards wearing Disney merchandise having spent a couple days in Orlando while visiting grandparents in West Palm Beach.
LaGuardia to Indy
New York LaGuardia (KLGA) - Indianapolis (KIND) | E170 Delta (Republic Airlines)
New York City is a top vacation destination any time of year, but Labor Day weekend brings Electric Zoo, an annual Electronic Music Festival. Your passengers represent a fine diversity of professionals on business, a couple of families with pre-teen and adolescents, and several dance revelers returning home. They all share the same travel acumen by choosing flights from LaGuardia over the schmucks that go to JFK.
GA Ops - Insight from Luxury Travel Magazine shows the top destinations for Labor Day weekend for the 1-percenters. Make your own mission with a private aircraft starting at any location within the article. Perhaps fly to the executive airport within your hometown. AOPA also provides a list of top resorts destinations with their own private airstrip. Here is a mission to provide a little inspiration:
You are the private pilot for a Big Oil company. You are flying an executive and family home after a very pleasant 2 weeks in their mountain cabin. Fire up the Citation X at Telluride (KTEX; any terminal apron) and return the family to Sugarland Regional (KSGR).
BONUS: Telluride has a gorgeous airport on a plateau in the valley. The approach is probably a lot more fun than the departure. Make the outbound flight from Sugarland to Telluride first before returning with your passengers.
Canadian National Exhibition (The Ex)
Labour Day marks the end of Canada’s largest annual fair. The Ex hosts 2 million visitors each year and ends with a 3-day airshow over Lake Ontario.
Statistics from Toronto Pearson (CYYZ) show August as the busiest month for passenger traffic, presumably mostly related to The Ex. Now it’s time to take them all home. Choose any Canadian domestic airline brand (Air Canada, Westjet, etc), load up at Toronto Pearson, and fly to the domestic destination of your choosing (appropriate to your selected airline).
Labour Day Monday is the last day of the airshow. This year’s show includes a display from the USAF Thunderbirds and the RCAF CF-18 demo team. Military aircraft are based at Pearson during show week.
- If so inclined, provide your own aerial demonstration over Lake Ontario at the fairgrounds in either the F-16 or F-18.
- Make the Thunderbirds’ return flight to Nellis AFB in either the F-16 or C17, which provides for the Thunderbirds’ support personnel. Refueling arrangements may be necessary.
Buttonville Airport (CYKZ) serves as the base of operations for civilian aircraft at the airshow and is open to the public for a static display. You were making a day trip (in either your C172 or SR22). Make your return trip home (home airport recommendations accepted).
