I’ve been thinking - what aircraft (not type, but specific airframe) is the most famous? The obvious answer is Air Force One, but what planes do you think should be on the list?
Im going to go Antonov AN-225.
Largest aircraft in the world, it’s unique so people like to see rare stuff.
This will be my guess, even though AF1 might be a bit more famous to non-avgeeks.
the 737MAX family since every news outlet talks about the smallest thing to happen on one
This is so sadly true 💀. It’s like as if news agencies are sensitive against them.
The British Airways Concorde
One of the most famous British Airways Concordes, G-BOAD, set a record in 1996 for the fastest transatlantic flight, completing the journey in just under three hours. Although the Concorde was retired in 2003 due to rising costs and the aftermath of a tragic accident, it remains a legendary figure in aviation history. This definitely has to be on the list of most recognizable aircraft in the world.
Mine would be the B747 and the A380. I say the B747 as it was the aircraft that carried the 70s and 80s and literally everyone knew about it and flew on it if they were lucky. It started the double decker aircraft trend. And it looks magnificent. And the A380 which has carried the B747s legacy to today. Also people wonder how something that carries many people and is that big flies. Even non av geeks know about them. Also Concorde would be on the list as it was the first successful supersonic aircraft. I know the Russians had one but that didn’t last long and no one really knows about it apart from us av geeks.
Going on to military now and I would say the SR-71 Blackbird as it was and still is the fastest spy plane in the sky. Especially for people who grew up in the Cold War era who are still around today. Sticking to the Cold War era I would say the F-14 Tomcat, especially with the hype it got from its screen time on Top Gun. Back to modern times and I would say the B-2 Spirit as it is a wonder to look at just gliding around in the sky. The “flying wing” design is a huge wow factor even for an average person who isn’t interested in aviation. And finally the F-22 Raptor because freedom 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🦅.
9M-MRO. However in the wide public it’s mostly known for it’s callsign MH370. It was once the most followed and researched airframe due it’s disappearance and large chunks of it is still being searched for today
N106US. It might not be the most famous in the world but it set an example of what incredible piloting can accomplish when in a life or death situation.
I just realised the title says “Aircraft”, my post above doesn’t have a specific aircraft but you understand what I mean I hope.
Anything from a high-profile incident. I think I’m going to agree with the MH370 pick.
N467US/D.B. Cooper.
747, the original jumbo
Almost as if there was a reason for that…
Maybe the airframes involved in 9/11. I think there’s barely an event that comes up as frequently even today when it comes to all sorts of discussions. I guess you don’t talk about the specific airframes though
N334aa 767, n612ua 767, n644aa,757 and n591ua 757. These are the aircraft used on 9/11. While not the most famous in the standard way, I do believe these are some of the most famous aircraft in history by completely changing it. My condolences continue to go out to the victims of that fateful day.
That story is straight out of an action movie. Maybe that’s where those ideas originated from
I’d say N757AF has become pretty notable in recent years, given its owner.
Same I think that it is the iconic 747 from how old it is and iconic it is what about you
Miss it
I wish I was born to see it fly the sky
I think it’s A380 or B747, they became the most iconic aircrafts because of its huge size
It could be Cessna 172 because it is the most produced aircraft. For ga lovers, isn’t it?
