Welcome to the Kabul Airlift 24-Hour Event!
I’ve spent multiple days gathering information on all the flights below to ensure maximum realism.
The Kabul Airlift was a massive evacuation operation in August 2021, following the fall of Kabul to the Taliban. In just weeks, over 120,000 people were evacuated from Hamid Karzai International Airport, with military aircraft flying constant missions under chaotic and dangerous conditions. This became one of the largest airlifts in history, demonstrating immense coordination and urgency to bring people to safety amidst a rapidly evolving crisis.
There are a lot of moving pieces, so I’m going to break this next part into a few sections. First, for our C-17 pilots: 95% of flights are between OTBH and OAKB. There are multiple flights with the same callsign because most of the flights have a return leg. If you’d like to operate both the inbound and outbound legs, that would be great—just let me know. Some C-17s departing OAKB we’re refueled, so KC-10s will be available if you’d like to use them. Once you choose one of these flights, I will PM you everything you’ll need for the flight.
For our KC-10 and support flight pilots: You will only be operating to and from OMAM, except for the one P-8, which will come from Isa Air Base. All of these aerial refueling and support flights vary in time, so pick the one that works best for you. Some of these flights take off before the event starts or land after it ends, for realism purposes, as the actual aircraft took off and landed at those times. Once you choose a flight, I will PM you most of the details for your flight.
For our air traffic controllers: I’d love to have all major airports fully staffed for the entire event, though I realize that’s ambitious. I have a list of departure and arrival times, as well as peak traffic periods, and can schedule controllers accordingly by time zone. Let me know which airport and frequency you’d like to control. To avoid overworking our ATC, each frequency will be assigned to one person—except for approach and departure, which will be handled by the same controller.
