The Heart of Africa

Minnesota Fun Fact

The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra is the only full-time orchestra in the U.S. (as an aside, I’ve seen them play before - they’re quite good, highly recommend searching them up on YouTube)

Departure Airport: Brussels Airport (BRU/EBBR)
Arrival Airport: Melchior Ndadaye International Airport (BJM/HBBA)
Aircraft: Airbus A330-300
Airline: Brussels Airlines
Flight Time: 8:31
Server: Expert

Alongside the rest of Brussels Airlines’ African network, our flight to Bujumbura today is leaving just after 8:00 AM

Climbing out with a light load past our airline’s namesake city

Cruising at 33,000 feet over Zurich. I’ve encountered a surprising number of people who’ve thought Zurich is Switzerland’s capital. While Zurich is the nation’s most populous (and arguably most famous) city, Bern is the capital.

If someone can identify the Swiss Canton we’re in, I’ll be seriously impressed and give you 15 cookies

Getting our first view of Africa, near the Algerian town of Collo

The desert is looking… dry

Getting a little greener over Chad

Turning a long final into Bujumbura, Burundi’s largest city (though not its capital - that’s Gitega, 40 miles to the East). Bujumbura sits on Lake Tanganyika, the world’s second largest (by volume) and second deepest freshwater lake, after Lake Baikal on both counts.

A smooth touchdown at Melchior Ndadaye International Airport. Not only is it Burundi’s only international airport, it’s also it’s only airport with a paved runway

It is!

the approach is stunning.

It’s very interesting how their route network aligns pretty well with Belgian colonial history in Africa. Brussels Airlines flies to everywhere that was previously colonized by Belgium (Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi), except for the Lado Enclave which is now South Sudan and not a very safe place.
