The idea is to set off from my home airport of EGBG Leicester & make my way South, performing short VFR flights from airport to airport across Europe, to visit less used/smaller 3D airports crafted by our awesome community.
A few desirables for trip:
- Flying VFR only using only VORs etc for navigation
- Visual approaches only
- Cockpit view/No HUD(other than to check nav occasionally)
- Refuelling only at airports with facilities
- In real time, with live weather(cloud height/coverage)
- These are mostly short flights, so the idea is to enjoy VFR flying(follow rivers/roads/borders/around terrain etc/abide by airspace restrictions particularly around airbases)
- Fly over each airport & enjoy the design. If possible perform touch & go/pattern work
DAY 8
Due to other IF activities, it’s been a few weeks since the last leg of the tour & I definitely felt a little rusty in the Cirrus.
After visiting almost every one of the huge amount of 3D airports in western Germany, today we were visiting the last remaining few in the region, before moving North onto the next stage of our tour.
It was a perfectly clear VFR day with barely any wind, making it a leisurely Sunday morning/afternoon flight.
From our rented hangar in Bohmte, we first visited two uncontrolled airports in Porta-Westfalica & Rinteln.
At EDVY we first landed on the grass strip, which was actually much wider & longer than the asphalt runway. Always keen for a challenge, we got straight back into the air to perform a landing on that runway also. We were cruising at around 1500-2000ft today & there was lots of terrain in the region to navigate en route to & from these airports.
We had gained permission to make a quick visit to the airbase in Bueckeburg, so that was our next destination. We even got our own VIP spot whilst we were there. We took a quick look around the place, before heading off to our stopover destination in Hannover.
Although the airport at EDDV is much larger & is used a lot more than our usual stops, it does feature a nice little GA area in the centre of the field we were really keen to visit, with its own short asphalt runway to use.
It was our first time here, so I really didn’t expect the approach to rwy 27C to be in such close proximity to some of the airport buildings. It was a little distracting at first & we were using up too much of the short runway upon landing possibly as a result, so we did go-around much more than we usually would for sure. All in all, another enjoyable days flying.
EDXD Bohmte - Bad Essen - EDVY Porta-Westfalica
EDVY Porta-Westfalica - EDVR Rinteln
EDVR Rinteln - ETHB Bueckeburg Airbase
ETHB Bueckeburg Airbase - EDDV Hannover
Cruise speed: 105-109kts
Cruise Alt: 1500-2000ft
1hr 37 mins Flight Time - 9 Landings
Leaving the rented hangar to begin our days flying & lining up on the grass strip for take off at EDXD
The wide grass strip at EDVY was not too tricky
So it’s back in the air to shoot the narrow & shorter asphalt runway
Not much parking at EDVY, so we pull up at the fuel pumps
Lots of proper VFR flying around & through all the terrain today
A low first approach & late touch/go at EDVR
Down low on the ‘ledgey’ left downwind at EDVR
Before taking a little break & enjoying the scenery
Cutting through more terrain en route to ETHB
Arriving at ETHB & taking a good look at the airport
Before we come in to land & park up in our VIP spot
Approaching EDDV
The very close approach to the GA rwy at EDDV
Left crosswind in to the downwind using the adjacent rwy
A good view of the GA area at EDDV
Parked at the tie-down to end another days flying
