Central Asia is experiencing a massive aviation shift right now. For years, Kazakhstan dominated the regional transit market. But Uzbekistan (with a population of 37M) is making a massive leap forward to become the ultimate premium bridge between Europe, Asia, and North America.
I want to share some incredible facts about the infrastructure revolution happening in real life, and the exciting new route opportunities this brings to us!
1. The Fleet: 22 New Dreamliners & Global Expansion
Currently, Uzbekistan Airways operates a modern fleet featuring brand new Airbus A320neo/A321neos and seven Boeing 787-8s. But they are now in the initial stages of ordering 22 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners for ultra-long-haul routes!
The Strategy: With this massive increase in capacity, Tashkent plans to offer highly competitive pricing and premium service to capture the Asia-to-Europe transit flow.
The US Market Dominance: Uzbekistan Airways already holds the unique prestige of being the only carrier in Central Asia to operate regular direct flights to New York. Now, private carriers like Centrum Air and Qanot Sharq are rapidly expanding, launching their own widebody Airbus A330 flights directly to New York as well.
2. The $2.5B Mega-Hub & “New Tashkent” City
Started in July 2026, this isn’t just an airport. A full-fledged, futuristic smart city (“New Tashkent”) — literally the size of half the current capital — is being built around this mega-hub, 30km away.
It will feature CAT IIIb autoland, two independent remote runways, underground robotic baggage sorting, and a high-speed underground bullet train station directly beneath the terminal.
3. Massive Regional Airports Overhaul
The expansion isn’t just in the capital. The entire country’s aviation infrastructure is being completely rebuilt:
Samarkand (UTSS): Recently underwent deep modernization. The stunning new terminal is architecturally designed in the shape of an open book, symbolizing the ancient city’s deep scholarly history. Capacity expansion is still ongoing!
Bukhara (UTSB): A brand new international airport is being built from scratch 26km from the city center on over 307 hectares. It’s a $226M PPP project scheduled to open in late 2026.
Urgench (UTNU): South Korea’s Incheon International Airport Corporation is investing $222M to build a virtually brand-new, high-tech airport complex.
Termez (UTST): Currently building a brand new paved runway and expanding the apron to receive and handle heavy widebody aircraft.
Nukus (UTNN): Full reconstruction of administration buildings, perimeter, and modernization of security systems.
Fergana Valley Hub (Fergana, Namangan, Andijan): Infrastructure is being systematically updated across these cities with phased runway and terminal upgrades to create a unified aviation hub for the valley.
Small Regional Airports: To boost domestic tourism, entirely new local airports have been built from scratch and launched in Zaamin, Kokand, Muynak, Shakhrisabz, Sariasio, and Sokh.
4. The Current Airport (Islam Karimov - UTTT) & The Airline Boom
The current Tashkent airport won’t be demolished. Instead, it will be transformed into a highly efficient hub for Low-Cost Carriers, domestic tourism, and a premium center for VIP and Business aviation.
This is crucial because the airline industry in Uzbekistan is booming at an unprecedented rate. The old airport will serve as a home base for the rapidly growing number of new local airlines, such as Centrum Air, Qanot Sharq, Uzbekistan Express, Fly Khiva, Air Samarkand, My Freighter (Centrum Holding), and Silk Avia (which focuses exclusively on domestic flights within Uzbekistan to connect the regions), plus many others!

The Future is Exciting!
With all these massive developments, Central Asia is truly becoming a global aviation hotspot. It’s amazing to watch this infrastructure and fleet expansion happen in real time. Both Tashkent and Bukhara are getting massive airports built from scratch, and Samarkand now has its spectacular “open book” terminal. Hopefully, we get to see all these beautiful new airports represented in the Infinite Flight simulator one day to add an insane level of realism!
